You think it’s a strawman because you aren’t picking up what I’m laying down.

I’m addressing the mechanism behind the reaction which the first comment described. The emotional diffusion happens because empathy scales poorly with numbers, not because the victims are animals and not humans.

Replacing the animals with many humans would produce the same effect.

It’s an analogy about the cognitive response to scale, not a misrepresetation (strawman) of the claim that it reduces the emotional impact.

What I’m trying to illustrate is that there is a bias for the human emotional weight which is conflicting with the fact the emotional weight has been diffused.

It’s interesting you should say that…

Imagine if the second part wasn’t a group of animals, but a group of people.

How would it make you feel?

There’s an interesting dynamic here where the level of empathy for the total sum is diffused across the set.

    Consider it this way:

Imagine if I told you there was a little girl, her name is Sarah, and she’s starving right now after her parents sold her into slavery to buy rations.

If you’re not a psychopath, you’ve got some degree of empathy for Sarah and would likely to be swayed to contribute a few dollars to a gofundme, if you knew it could help her somehow.

Now what if I told you there are thousands of girls with stories like that, and I’ve made a foundation to helping them, but I just need a few dollars.

Notice how your level of empathy drops, the more people you add in. Eventually you get to the point where it’s hard to give any empathy to the individual, and you just shrug and say “that’s the world we live in.”

Now imagine you’re the one contributing to the slave trade.

That’s what it’s like to pay for meat.

“Eating meat is normal, yeah it might cause some suffering, but it tastes so good”
