News@lemmy.world•More than half of UK therapists report rise in out-of-control porn use
41·11 小时前Well the claim is that the problem has gotten worse, or at least more widespread. One thought is that the users’ external stresses (economic etc.) are now harder to get away from, so more seek refuge in porn. Not great but I guess it beats drinking. Anoher idea is that the porn itself has gotten more addictive, like through AI enhancement. Not saying it’s either of those necessarily. They are just obvious guesses.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is there something like an addon that generates (or picks from a list of) random cookies so you don't fall into captcha hell if you have to use Google?
14·17 小时前That’s not really possible if the server does anything sane to authenticate the cookies. All you can do is log in the hard way, then save the cookie you get in the hope of re-using it later.

1·2 天前I looked up MDiscs and they are pretty stupidly expensive but might be a reasonable bet. You might want to use something like PAR to make a backup, that gives you some redundancy without making extra copies.
From experience I can say leaving HDD’s powered down for long periods is asking for trouble. The lubricants in them get sticky and then the drives won’t spin up. Ideally you want to keep your HDD’s spinning all or most of the time.
I guess you could check ebay for an older generation LTO tape drive. LTO 5 isn’t a total relic yet, and it stores 1.5TB on a tape, which would give you a bit of headroom above your 1TB dataset. Tape and optical disc are about the only backup media with any durability.
If your media files are of public interest and not in copyright, you could upload them to archive.org which is free, and other people could access them too.

3·2 天前8 bit MCU series popularized by the Arduino a decade or two ago. Kind of obsolete now but still has some uses and attractions.

7·2 天前they’re the norm not the exception among people with an interest in watches.
Watches stopped being interesting to anyone except watch nerds by the 1980s or so, when they all became electronic except for very niche mechanical ones.

9·2 天前It’s better to use an AVR for that. 6502 was a ridiculous kludge for the sake of slightly improved code density.
solrize@lemmy.mltodatahoarder@lemmy.ml•Are memory cards a reliable medium for mid to long time media storage?
1·2 天前The trouble is that the failures are correlated. As the cards get older, they lose data more. Also even the cheap ones are expensive compared to alternatives. How much data are you talking about? Your best bet is probably backing up to remote storage. Everyone wants what you are asking for, but the only good answer is a tape drive, and those are too expensive to even think about. I use borg backup with this: https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/
I have 5TB there, very affordable and all encrypted.

Spaceflight@sh.itjust.works•"Megaconstellations May Be Just 2 Days Away From Causing a Kessler Syndrome" by Anton PetrovEnglish
14·2 天前It’s not exactly the wrong place to post something about Kessler syndrome, but it’s obnoxious to post a video link instead of explaining the idea and/or linking to a written source.
Looking up Kessler syndrome online, the “2 days away” thing seems to mean that satellites have maneuvering thrusters to avoid collisions with each other. If a big enough solar flare knocked out all the collision avoidance stuff in the satellites, then within 2 days (3 days is what the other source said) there could potentially be enough collisions to trigger the syndrome.
Anyway people launching stuff are now at least aware of the issue and taking some kinds of precautions, maybe not enough.
Usually you do this with venv. I’m sure there’s a cool kids way to automate everything but it’s not that hard to just download 3.10 (or whatever version you need), compile it, install it into a 3.10 directory, and point your path at it.
I don’t like Gnome either. I’ve been using MATE which is pretty straightforward, and looks like old-fashioned Windows. Not saying that’s a good thing, but at least for me it had very little learning curve.
If that project requires Python 3.10 and won’t work with 3.13, that may be a problem in its own right.
Update: TS11 battery slowly drained (observed by triple click voltage measurement) over the past 5 days, down to 2.5 volts today, so I recharged it. This is definitely too fast. I still haven’t gotten to where my DMM is to measure the current. I might try turning off the aux lighting to see if that slows the drain down. But, 1000mah in 5 days is around 8ma, and I don’t think the leds are getting nearly that much current even though they are very bright for standby leds.

I don’t see a question here. There might have been one but some words got chopped out.
