Who am I?
I am an emeritus professor of epidemiology, now living outside Brevard, NC, hence the title of the series. Before going back to school to study epidemiology (at age 40!), I had done a PhD in philosophical theology. I taught religion and philosophy and worked as a pastor. My work in epidemiology focused on psychiatric epidemiology, primarily on the mental health and disorders in children and adolescents.
The posts are diverse because they reflect things I have read or seen recently, but usually they related to themes that have been important to me for many years. Hence the title of ‘Reflections’ because I am thinking about old things in new ways, or applying thoughts from years ago to new situations. Though they are diverse, there are underlying themes that tie them together.

Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and publication archives. Free subscribers get all regular posts (usually twice a week). Paid subscribers get any additional posts, plus occasional notes and responses to contacts as time allows.
Paid subscriptions are how the Substack platform supports itself. It gets 10% of the paid subscription. After fees for credit cards and payment management, the rest is sent to me, allowing me to contribute more to important causes, both local agencies serving those in poverty or who are unhoused, and global agencies involved in food distribution and refugee assistance. Never miss an update—every new post is sent directly to your email inbox and to the Substack app. For a spam-free, ad-free reading experience, plus audio and community features, get the Substack app or log in to Substack online.
