One of the most striking things in reading more classic English texts is just how impressive some of these authors could be with language. It's incredibly humbling, but it's also a valuable learning experience - practice is great, but even just exposure makes it easier to get words to flow.

On that point - Looking at the general market it also makes me all the more blessed to have stable employment, because it means I never have to think to myself "oh, I'll have to learn how to write this genre, this way, to make money" and can instead just peck away at the keyboard with the idea "even if nobody reads this, I'll have at least written what I wanted to write". It'd be nice to have more time, but 「仕方がない」 as they say. And I find that a pretty recurring pattern is that "what I wanted to write" seems to guarantee that I seem unable to write female characters that are intended to be attractive who don't end up having some crossover into Sodachi territory. I don't even necessarily intend to do it, it's just a natural thing, like a sea turtle going to the ocean, a Monarch butterfly moving south for the winter, or a cicada screaming on a tree. God works in mysterious ways.

Last week the story seemed to really start but things improved when they introduced a cute loli who works for the church. MC and loli set off on a minor mission to retrieve herbs to cure some minor character's wife, contrary to church doctrine. On the way they encounter action scenes which are too dark to see and a mysterious lab which seems to be growing monsters. After an exhausting battle with an endlessly re-spawning spiral-faced ogre they're rescued by (dramatic twist) a sexy demon oneesan. She claims that the lab was a church facility and this is reluctantly confirmed by the cute loli. Yes, it's the old "demons good, church le bad" trope. Meanwhile passive slave Milkit opens the door to a cliffhanger. I expect they'll milk it for all it's worth.

This show is only saved from its own preposterousness by the main cast being cute (or hot) girls. Still not much sign of yuri although sexy demon oneesan seems to have taken a shine to church loli. I can't blame her for that.

I really am having a hard time understand where he's going with this. Like you said, haven't we spent the last 10 or so years going over and over the disadvantages of this? Like the main character's forced retirement? It's like we keep getting the point hammered home that boxing is dangerous and that you need to be a monster that focuses only on wining when you step into the ring if you don't want to get killed, but then it seems like the narrative forgets that it just said that and repeats the arc again, and again, and again. When are we going to actually advance to that next stage and see Ippo cross that line? Because at the moment, it looks like Sendo's going to end up, at best, crippled for life in some way, and I don't think that'd be very encouraging to our ostensible main character.

I mean, look at pic related, Moe, from the simpsons, is somehow a better overseer of his boxer's safety than old man "I punched a tree stump into a hill so I could fight an American" Kamogawa, and he deliberately set up the match knowing that Homer would lose!

How long has it been? Those were fun times. I don't mind since I thought it was all in good fun back then, but I appreciate the courtesy.

God, I love the reactions and visual gags.

Something I noticed in the fighting, for the multi-arrow spam, instead of a lot of flashing lights it's done more as the "moving objects across the screen" approach, or even well-defined "streaks" in the case of True Archer's bow-fire, so it's still generally pretty easy to track everything visually. Plus the OST and the SFX are both actually being integrated nicely and cleanly, so you don't have something like the "sakuga" fights from the ufotable movies, Apoc, etc. where it sounds like you're getting hit with a C-Rank sonic-based Noble Phantasm.

If I understand this correctly, the grail system works by summoning heroic spirits and then sacrificing them to power the grail and grant wishes. But, the grail can do the summoning itself and the heroic spirits aren't destroyed, they just go back to the throne and can be summoned again. This implies that the energy used to summon a servant is less than the energy gained by sacrificing it.

So, can we automate this?

They don't go back to the throne, they get collected by the Greater Grail. The magical energy clump of six servants is what's used to fuel the "wish". And technically what's getting collected isn't the actual heroic spirit from the throne, but the vessel that the Greater Grail itself created. If your goal is "wish granting" the "Grail" is technically entirely arbitrary - the reason the Fuyuki ritual requires seven heroic spirits is because it's trying to punch a hole into the Root. The wish-granting still follows equivalent exchange (though it can make a pretty big exchange, since it's using sixty years of bottled up magical energy from a leyline), while touching the root involves going "outside the world" and can technically violate it if used to attain capital-M Magic. Though since it's only really designed to regain Heaven's Feel it's not necessarily omnipotent.

That was dull, wordy and extremely womanly. Thanks to the spirit of the crazy cat-lady witch, the hotheads of the cosplay council are restrained and Luna is spared a fate worse than watching this episode. After only a single attempt at a shoujo romance Luna finds her nascent maternal instincts drawing her into single motherhood. There goes the street (as they used to say back when people cared about such things).

On the plus side we got a glimpse of loli Luna and one of the short witches turned out to be female…I think.

Now we can have the equivalent of an interminable magical academy arc as Luna tries to teach shuumatsu shota how to avoid being retro-actively aborted. I have a dread feeling that this show's best episodes are already behind it.

After all that heavy (and boring) drama we get a temporary reprieve with some light and fluffy nekowitch backstory. It turns out that she was a bratty tsundere cute whose greatest dream was to become a crazy cat lady and live in the legendary nekomori. She would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for that meddling Luna with her winsome charms. Won over by Luna's low expectations of friendship, nekowitch went on a suicidal solo mission to the white witches' castle and got duly executed. It's from her that Luna inherited a couple of catlike familiars. Thankfully they refrain from explaining what the other characters are feeling as though we can't read a room (unlike the ox and sheep).

With a tragic end recounted we're dragged back to the main plot. Shuumatsu shota fell victim to a traditional wicked step mother who was only trying to save the world from certain ruin. I reckon she did nothing wrong.

Looks like it'll be all shota all of the time from now on and I'm not keen on that. At least we got half an episode of shoujo cuteness to remind us of what this story could've been. I noticed some Moomins influence and, at its best, this show has a similar mysterious magical feel. Except there'd be a whole lot more yuri if Tove Jannson had written it.

That would be so much better. I could even forgive the drama if we had a loli instead of a shota. Sadly it seems this show is for childless women rather than girls with hearts full of romance.

A lot of plot happened that I wasn't really paying attention to. Constance visits a masked ball and meets some shady slave traders, Scarlett does some poltergeisting then Constance somehow gets duped into a fake engagement to Lily's widower. After a huge backstory dump we meet the wimpy crown prince and his obnoxious crown princess who is also a practising villainess. The good news is Constance has decided to take up villainy herself. She's tired of being the good girl who always loses but she still wants to help ghost Scarlett out of the kindness of her otomegokoro. Then she meets the King for a leaden metaphor stroll and we get a brief moment of villainess fansa. We also got some much needed flowery panels.

It's pleasantly shoujo and Constance x Scarlett is a promsing onee-loli(ish) romance. The plot seems to be overly complicated but it's really an excuse for lavish interiors, pointy-chinned ikemen and MC's penchant for cosplay. I like it even without Pamela.

An episode of plot overload. Connie is invited to the local Villainess Society's secret meeting where she tries her hand at villainy under Scarlett's tutelage. Unfortunately she's rubbish at it. Demo daijoubu, Pamela got a mention! Sadly there was no new footage of her. Just when it looked like MC would be ruined by the dread hag Deborah, a flirty new villainess steps in and saves her. That sets the pattern for the episode as MC is constantly accosted by antagonistic minor characters and saved at the crucial moment by other minor characters. After a run in with a slanderous (and cute) gossip columnist and the local Women's Temperance leader, none of which got us closer to finding out who framed Scarlett, MC meets her fiance for some more exposition. It seems that a redundant shota character has been kidnapped and nobody noticed. That can only mean one thing: Connie must have tea with the obnoxious crown princess.

Then things get a bit Kusuriya no Hitorigoto as Scarlett detects dokou which prevents pregnancies. Somebody is after keeping the wet crown prince out of the line of succession by barrening his bride. Frankly they're doing the kingdom a favour. Finally, a CGI carriage ride takes a turn for the melodramatic. An ersatz coachman is up to something nefarious and Scarlett does some mild poltergeisting to hold him at bay. Quick thinking Connie conjures the tongue-twister trope and yappari the villain fire a pistol at her in a desperate attempt to create a cliffhanger. Did Scarlett survive this assassination attempt?

Oh wait, she's a ghost.

Did MC survive this assassination attempt in episode four? We can only guess!

The avalanche of minor characters was distracting and felt like a lot of filler. Like Kusuriya, this show many seeds and reaps them long after they're forgotten. It rewards those who pay close attention but a week is a long time in anime and I'm mostly here for the villainesss fansa. Either way I expect the plot will continue to thicken under a pile of red herrings for a while yet.

Kanata is in the biggest shock of his life after learning that Ren is an angel.

Hope Aiba doesn't find out they live under the same roof.

But everything isn't champagne and kisses, despite getting third place, Sawatari has to make the hardest decision of his life.

I wonder what French car he will use in the next race.

It's the peak of summer, so no racing today.

Instead we take the time to visit Ren's grandma and hug some trees.

Kanata gets to experience the joy of being drifted by a kei truck on a small country road.

The countryside is amazing.

Speaking of amazing, Kanata finds out about Japanese dragonflies, so he wastes no time breaking a few traffic laws to get his hands on a net so he can catch them.

A lovely time off with smiles all around.

Lets see if Kanata agrees to some neat upgrades to his car in the next episode.

That is unless the entire next episode is just a Supra going sideways.

I giggled at the part when the eurobeat kicked in when Grandma started drifting the kei truck.

What a great ass.

A fun day off from torture, but no worries, Torture is still in it thinking of torture.

Torture not being able to hold back against Hime's suffering from not having breakfast in time was cute and fun.

Head scrubbing, the most concentrated form of pleasure.

Maou-sama being proud of Maomao-chan's perfect torture was touching.

Ex also got a bit tortured by Hime not getting in bed on time and sleeping in until breakfast.
