Authorised Economic Operator (AEO)

The EU Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme is based on the World Customs Organization (WCO) SAFE Framework of Standards. It was established to secure and facilitate global trade and is fully operational since 1 January 2008.

Under this programme, trusted traders who voluntarily meet a wide range of criteria work in close cooperation with Customs authorities to assure the common objective of supply chain security.

This has a double impact: it entitles Authorised Economic Operators to trade facilitation benefits throughout the EU; and it contributes to better risk management and use of resources by enabling customs to focus its limited controls on the control of other less reliable operators and supply chains instead.

eLearning products are available to learn more about the AEO status: the AEO eLearning module, the EU eAEO Specific Trader Portal eLearning module and the AEO eBook.

Mutual recognition of AEOs is a key part of the World Customs Organization’s SAFE Framework of Standards that aims to strengthen end-to-end security in supply chains and increase benefits for traders.
