About the Guild (and what we’re doing here)
What is the Guild of Food Writers?
The Guild of Food Writers is the professional association of food writers and broadcasters in the United Kingdom. Established in 1984, it now has over 550 authors, broadcasters, columnists and journalists among its members.
Our aims are to:
bring together professional food journalists, broadcasters and authors at Guild events and via online events and forums
compile a comprehensive and detailed Directory of Members
broaden the range of members’ knowledge and experience by arranging discussions, forums, comparative tastings and visits, monthly workshops, and by publishing monthly newsletters for members.
encourage the development of new writers by every means, including competitions and the Annual Awards for Food Writing and Broadcasting.
contributes to the growth of public interest in, and knowledge of, the subject of food.
offer professional support and guidance to members.
We’re run by volunteers. Take a look at the current committee here.
Can I join the Guild?
The Guild is always keen to welcome new members. If you are paid to create and publish content about food that is available to a UK audience you are eligible. Benefits of membership, apart from a friendly community of fellow food writers, include access to regular events, professional advice, and a listing in the online Directory of Guild Members. The latter is both a showcase of our members' varied talents, and a comprehensive contacts bible listing areas of expertise. Find out more about Joining the Guild.
What are you doing here on Substack?
Community! We don’t intent to generate new posts here. The reasons to subscribe are more about connecting with other writers, sharing advice and having easy access to a showcase of wonderful food writing. We’ll be:
promoting the work of Guild members by sharing posts and showcasing the wonderful breadth of creativity to be found in our members’ work here on Substack. (If that’s you and we aren’t subscribed and recommending yours yet, please get in touching we’ll fix that immediately!)
creating a community space for both members and non to share advice about writing on Substack, ask questions, and generally learn about the changing face of publishing together. (Join us on Notes and over in the Chat tab.)
We’re delighted to be here as cheerleaders for the incredible innovation and creative skills of our members and we can’t wait to share them with you.
