This is a newsletter that documents, defends, and lionizes the natural world. Welcome!
My name is Janisse Ray. I’m a nature writer.
I’m here because I believe that stories matter, that they change lives. I’ve seen my own life changed over and over again because of a story I read or heard or saw. I’ve seen other people’s lives changed.
I mean changed permanently. The story ends and boom, you’re a different person. You think differently. You act differently.
Stories are transformative. That makes them very powerful.
I also think stories are medicine. They’re secret passages to the heart. They’re mycelia. Maps. Leaves that build the soil of our culture, as Wendell Berry said.
That’s why I write.
I write to make a difference in how humans live on the Earth. We are deeply connected to this place that is our home, and when we destroy it, we destroy ourselves. We need the Earth, the Earth needs us. I believe that we can save wild things, that we can create a better quality of life, and that we can make the world a more habitable place for all of us, in ways large and small.
We’re all needed—right now—to help with that.
