Answers to Questions (FAQ)

What is the Gerudo? (Definition)

The Gerudo refers both to a fictional people in The Legend of Zelda universe and to the writing system associated with that people. Gerudo is primarily a fictional alphabet used to transcribe messages using specific symbols.

Some sources indicate that geldo is the official name of the Gerudo typeface.

How to write/encrypt using Gerudo language?

Writing or encoding in Gerudo involves replacing each letter of the Latin alphabet with a corresponding symbol from the Gerudo alphabet.

This process is a simple monoalphabetic substitution: the same letter always corresponds to the same Gerudo symbol.

Achar(65)Bchar(66)Cchar(67)Dchar(68)Echar(69)
Fchar(70)Gchar(71)Hchar(72)Ichar(73)Jchar(74)
Kchar(75)Lchar(76)Mchar(77)Nchar(78)Ochar(79)
Pchar(80)Qchar(81)Rchar(82)Schar(83)Tchar(84)
Uchar(85)Vchar(86)Wchar(87)Xchar(88)Ychar(89)
Zchar(90)1char(49)5char(53)?char(63)!char(33)

Note that two numbers (the 1 and the 5) and two punctuation symbols (the question mark ? and the exclamation mark !) appear in the game transcripts.

Example: ZELDA is translated char(90)char(69)char(76)char(68)char(65)

In Zelda games, messages in Gerudo are usually transcribed from English messages (but not all texts are simple transcriptions: some Gerudo words like Sav'otta, Voe, Vai do not have a direct letter-for-letter equivalent)

How to translate/decrypt Gerudo messages?

Translating or decoding Gerudo is essentially the reverse of encoding. Each Gerudo symbol represents a specific Latin letter. Translation is therefore done using a table that corresponds to letters of the alphabet in Gerudo symbols.

Example: char(71)char(69)char(82)char(85)char(68)char(79) is translated GERUDO.

How to recognize a Gerudo ciphertext?

The language of Gerudo is used by women warriors of the same name in the video game Zelda. Their people live near a desert and are ruled by a man Ganon/Ganondorf. Any reference to these elements is a clue.

The symbols are quite vertical, very rounded with long curves resembling commas/lines drawn with a brush.

dCode uses the work of sarinilli here

Zelda's universe has many other languages like Sheikah, Goron or Hylian.
