How Database Management works

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Database Management provides comprehensive database management for all flavors of Oracle Databases, significantly reducing the burden on DBAs by providing a full lifecycle solution encompassing monitoring, performance management, tuning, and database administration. By connecting to databases on-premises via the management agent or to cloud databases via private endpoints, Database Management allows users to monitor database performance through metric collections and enables users to perform administration tasks on the database. Metrics are obtained through scheduled collections and stored in OCI. The service utilizes these collections to consolidate and build advanced data visualizations and monitoring tools for easy resource administration in the cloud console. Administration tasks, monitoring, and performance tuning are achieved through API and SQL calls to the database from the service.

Performance management

Database fleet management

Monitor and manage a fleet of databases from a single console.

Top resources utilization for all of your databases is displayed in an easy-to-read visualization. Short-term trend analysis can be assessed on historic time intervals to quickly mitigate any bottlenecks for your database environments. Tree-map views provide quick analysis of top consumers within a group of databases or a compartment in OCI.

Exadata monitoring

Exadata infrastructure monitoring provides in-depth performance and configuration metrics of Exadata systems at a fleet level.

The overview provides a consolidated view of the Exadata fleet with performance metric overview, configuration details, and alarm counts. Further details for an individual Exadata system are provided, including database system components as well as Exadata Storage components. Database cluster nodes, databases, ASM, and Listeners each provide metrics associated with their performance. Storage Server grid details provide deeper insights into the health of your storage performance in the Exadata infrastructure. View I/O statistics, resource utilization, disk metrics, and more through charts and rich visualizations.

HeatWave MySQL

HeatWave MySQL monitoring provides an in-depth performance review of your entire MySQL database systems fleet in a single location.

Top metrics are visualized in a fleet page to ease the management of several database systems, and alarms are consolidated for a comprehensive analysis at a glance. Furthermore, drill down into a single MySQL database system for more granular performance review. Monitoring status, performance metrics, and configuration variables are displayed within the console. Real-time performance monitoring with Performance Hub provides key insights into queries running against your database system.

SQL Performance Watch

SQL Performance Watch is a feature in Database Management that helps enable lower-cost change impact assessment.

With it, DBAs can proactively address potential issues before they affect end users and maintain optimal performance. SQL Performance Watch safeguards the production system against SQL performance regressions due to various database changes, such as upgrades, migrations, patch sets, Init.ora configuration modifications, schema changes, routine maintenance tasks, statistics refresh, and more. SQL Performance Watch generates comprehensive workload report for the assessed change with granular view of changes impacting SQL execution plans and various statistics, such as elapsed time, CPU time, buffer gets, I/O, etc.

Performance Hub

Obtain a real-time visualization of database work over time with Performance Hub.

Filters allow for further dissecting a database’s workload and displaying session-level database activity. Quickly find spikes, or anomalies, in database wait events and utilize a time-period selector to zero in on performance windows. Correlate the waits to specific SQL statements or session IDs to start performance tuning. The SQL Tuning Advisor can be evoked from within Performance Hub to assist in a quick resolution to problematic SQL statements.

Performance administration tools

Database Management offers built-in tools to maximize database performance.

The SQL Tuning Advisor finds the optimum execution plan for a query to reduce overhead and time of the SQL statements. SQL plan management and SQL tuning sets allow for large-scale query tuning and performance consistency in the database over time. Optimizer Statistics Advisor ensures the Optimizer has the best information for SQL execution plans. Having all of the individual tools in a single location maximizes a DBA’s efforts by reducing the time necessary for performance management.

Database overview

The database resource overview, or homepage, summarizes key resource utilization over time along with configuration details.

Time-period selectors allow narrowing the scope of review. The console provides a single location to perform administration tasks, tuning operations, and performance review, providing a powerful tool to manage your databases. In-depth monitoring tools, such as Performance Hub and AWR Explorer, can be launched from the page, and links to additional services provide insights into the overall health of your database.
