Area Under A Curve 1

The document introduces two methods for estimating the area under a curve: using inscribed rectangles and circumscribed rectangles. It provides examples calculating the area under sample curves using these methods. The area is estimated as a range, such as between 1.97 and 2.72. The document states that the integral calculation provides the exact area under a curve, which is found by taking the limit of the number of rectangles to infinity. An example integral calculation of area under a curve between x=1 and x=2 is shown.

Area under the curve introduction

One method to find the area under a curve is by using the area of small rectangles inscribed
inside the curve.

The way to make these estimates better is to make more rectangles. If we make the limit of the
number of rectangles approach infinity we will get the actual area under the curve. This can be
calculated using the integral.
