Consequences and Discipline Cell Phone Use 1. Cell phone use (without permission) will result in confiscation of the device, which will be returned at the end of class. Failure To Respect One Another 1. Students will be informed that what they have said is unacceptable and told why it was unacceptable, then asked to apologize to the other student(s). 2. If the behavior continues and becomes more confrontational, the student will receive a verbal warning. 3. If the behavior does not stop, student will be given a detention. 4. If the disrespect becomes a physical altercation, a hall monitor will be called and the students involved will be sent to the Deans office. Talking While The Teacher Is Talking 1. I will walk to the students desk and stand beside them. 2. If standing beside them fails to work, I will give them a verbal warning. 3. If the verbal warning does not work, student will be asked to stay after the bell and I will talk to him/her one on one about the need to respect the teacher and not talk while I am talking, because it disrupts their classmates. Physical Fighting 1. A hall monitor will be called immediately and students will be escorted to the Deans office. Backpacks Not Under Desk 1. Student will be asked to place the backpack in the floor. 2. If the student does not put the backpack in the floor, they will be asked to set it in the floor beside my desk or I will confiscate it for the remainder of the period. Drinks With No Caps 1. Students will be asked to throw away any drinks without a cap. 2. If a drink is spilled because it did not have the cap on, students will have to clean up the mess and will not be allowed to drink anything in the classroom. 3. The same rules apply to food. If a majority of students are off task when given class time to complete an assignment
1. Assignment will be made due at the end of the period.
Classroom Procedures Daily Routine (based on block schedule and can be modified for a regular schedule) 1. Students will come in and put their completed homework (if due that day) in the basket designated for their class period. 2. Once homework is turned in, students will take their seats and read silently (a book of their choosing) for ten minutes. 3. I will announce that the ten minutes is finished and students will begin work on the daily journal topic or free write for ten minutes. 4. Once the ten minutes is finished, students will be given the chance to share what they wrote and we will discuss the topic. 5. After the discussion (depending on what we are working on): I will begin the lecture. Pass out worksheet(s) or a vocabulary packet. Pass out test booklets. Start the film. Ask someone to volunteer to start the in class reading. Have students break into groups to work on project/discuss the assigned reading. 6. Two or three minutes before the bell rings, I will ask students to clean up and scraps or trash on the floor. School Supplies 1. Each student will be provided a composition notebook for their daily journals, which I will collect at random each week. 2. Art supplies such as boxes colored pencils, markers, and crayons will be numbered and checked out to students then collected at the end of the period. 3. Pens and pencils will be kept in bins. Students can use them as long as they give some for of collateral. 4. Lined paper will be provided if needed, but only enough sheets to complete the assignment they are working on in my class. Late Work 1. Late work will not be accepted, unless it is late due to a medical emergency which can be proven with doctors note. Failure to turn in assignments on time will result in a zero for that assignment. Absences 1. Absences will result in the loss of five participation points each day absent.
Make Up Work 1. A folder listing the assignments for each week will be kept by the door. Students can check what they need and I will make a packet for them. 2. Make Up Work will only be given for excused absences which will require a note from a parent, doctor, or in event of the death of a family member a copy of the funeral pamphlet.
Bathroom Use 1. Only one student can go at a time, unless it is an emergency. 2. A pass will be available for students to take as long as they signal to me that they are going. 3. In the event of an emergency (vomit, etc) the student does not need to ask to go.
Extra Credit Four extra credit assignments will be given over the course of the school year. They will be worth 15 points each. Students who volunteer to read will be given extra credit; 1 to 8 points depending on the amount of reading and if they use an accent.
Good Behavior Students will be given a classroom dollar for good behavior at the end of each week. At the end of the year, they will be able to purchase something from the classroom store. I will have books and art/school supplies available for purchase. If students are putting forth an effort, they will be given projects rather than essays to show their understanding. They will also be rewarded with fun activities that relate to the content, i.e. a themed party such as a jazz party based on The Great Gatsby (alcohol free of course!) Unacceptable Behavior If a student disrupts class, they will not receive the classroom dollar for the week and will suffer the consequences listed above, based on what they have done and the severity of their indiscretion. Students who do not turn in their assignments will be given an additional assignment, worth fewer points, that must be completed during the class period. This assignment will be completed on review game days, and other fun activity days. Students who do not work, will not be allowed to participate in fun activities.
