Exploring Sacraments in RS 35

The document discusses how the author's Religious Studies (RS35) class helped provide a deeper understanding of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church compared to their high school education. Specifically, the class revealed how baptism and Eucharist can be considered sacraments of reconciliation by forgiving sins. It also explained new concepts like viewing Eucharist as a celebration of Christ's saving act, rather than just attending mass. The greatest challenge discussed is becoming a "nominal Christian" who separates daily life from mass. Overall, the author found the class experience to be eye-opening and enjoyable rather than boring as previously assumed.

Digging Deeper through RS 35

The greatest disappointment ever hitting me to the bones is the reality on change. Why? Its simply because theres always more to learn. And whenever I think that I knew it all along, it turns out Im wrong. The topic about the church and the seven sacraments is already familiar to me. As arrogant as it might sound, its so familiar that it seemed boring for me to undergo this subject over and over again. What would you expect from a product of a private high school? But then again, I stand corrected. My four years of values education proved to be inadequate and shallow after a semester of RS 35. When I was in high school, I was taught on the things used for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and eucharist as well as its symbolisms. But I never knew that baptism and eucharist are also types of reconciliation because of their feature on the forgiveness of sins. There goes some trivia for me. The sacrament of baptism cleanses Christians from the original sin while the eucharist forgives our everyday failures and sins committed after baptism. Since the topic is all about digging deeper, heres some more information in a nutshell for me: The eucharist should be addressed with the verb celebrate instead of associating it with attend. And commemorating the saving act of Christ in dying on the cross doesnt simply mean looking back to recall a past event but a making present of great acts of the past which God had worked. Although we might not see it nor feel it, but as we celebrate the mass, its as if we were there at Calvary and Christ is with the gathered people sacrificing himself for our salvation.

What stuck in my brain the most from this subject was the greatest challenge of the sacrament of the eucharist becoming a nominal Christian which means most of the church-goers separate the Mass from their daily lives. This one is an honest-to-God new term for me. And I guess its my favorite term because it struck me maybe because Im one as well. Going to the church to attend mass has becom e a norm to my family so I think that if I wouldnt be able to attend, Ill be breaking a family tradition and that Ill upset God. But now with all these digging deeper about the seven sacraments, I think everything is crystal clear that the mass must not be thought of as an obligation, gaining of favor or a social gathering. Instead, it should be celebrated as it is with Christs saving act at the center of it all. I know I might have bitten more than I can chew and ended up swallowing the words I just spit out. But I admit that Im most thankful for the deeper knowledge strengthening my foundations about the church and its sacraments. And one more thing, the common misconception of people relating the Religious Studies subject to a mid-day nap is certainly 200% wrong. Just because we talk about God or the Church doesnt mean its all boring. In fact, my firsthand experience is evidence that it was so fun especially with all those creative reporting which turned out like a semi- RS quiz bowl. Honestly, it was fun. Bonding with my classmates and laughing together with our teacher while learning new things about the Church and its Sacraments.
