Positional Tolerance

Positional tolerance uses a feature control frame to specify a tolerance zone for accurately locating a single feature or group of features. For a group of holes located with basic dimensions, an array of tolerance zones equal to the number of holes results. The tolerance zone is described as a cylinder with a diameter equal to the tolerance value. Positional tolerance increases as a feature moves away from its minimum material condition location. A composite positional tolerance can be used when the location of a pattern of features is less restrictive than requirements between individual features.

11 POSITIONAL TOLERANCE

The true position of the hole is given by basic dimensions and a 0.2 positional tolerance. (single feature) 0.2 tol zone at true position of hole 10 P R 12 16
Positional tolerance uses a feature control frame to specify the tolerance zone required to accurately locate a feature or group of features such as center point(s), center axis, or the center of a plane.

An array of four tolerance zones is the result of the positional callout.

The central axes of the holes are: at true position, at extreme position, and at extreme attitude.

**Remember(holes, shafts, pins): The tolerance zone is described as a cylinder with diameter equal to the tolerance value and with the length or height of the feature.

The table shows the positional tolerance increasing as the hole moves away from MMC.

Bonus tolerance is the increase in positional tolerance as the hole moves away from MMC.

A composite positional tolerance is used when the location of a pattern of features is less restrictive than the hole-tohole requirements.
