Lighting Project
Thank you for contacting IKEA. We have looked at your suggestions and
would indeed be interesting in receiving ideas from your students.
We get many such requests each year and you will appreciate that this is
time consuming for the company. I have therefore talked to our Design
Department and requested detailed instructions which your students would
need to follow if their suggestions are to be taken seriously. We note the
requirements of your examination board and have written the instructions
with this in mind.
The Design Brief:
You are asked to develop a new lamp which utilises the Non 12volt unit
currently available from IKEA. The lamp must be capable of being sold in
a self assembly format and will need to be suitably packaged in our house
style. There will need to be simple assembly instructions, again, in our
house style. Our Marketing Department is particularly keen to have a
concept that we can call ST HG, which means the Tower.
Organising the project:
We would suggest that your students undertake the following research:
Using the information on our website we would suggest that they choose
a specific target market group and present a customer profile
Create a mood board using images from our website. This should
indicate the sort of style and environment the lamp would be used in.
Undertake a detailed product analysis of the existing IKEA lamps.
It will be vital that the complete product your students develop does reflect
the style of IKEA. For this reason, I have asked one of our designers to
draw up an initial concept for your consideration.
ST HG Concept:
The concept is for a short tower of identical shapes with spacers in
between.
The base would hold the Non unit.

From reading the letter I have been given I have been asked to
develop a new lamp in the style of IKEA. The lamp will use a non
12volt unit and must be assembled from parts with simple
instructions and sold in a flat pack format. The concept of the lights
design needs to be mirroring the STA HOG one which suggests that
the product will be a tower and assemble in height.
The design has to fit a specific target market group, however the
letter doesnt specify who. I will need to produce a detailed research
report within my coursework, a range of design concepts and
model/made a final product fulfilling the requirements of this letter.
