Critical Path Analysis

Different task calendars may cause different float values on same critical path (see below). You can tell it is the same path
by switching on Multiple Critical Paths and inserting Float Path column.

Same Calendar

Different Calendar

Under Tools > Schedule > Options > Advanced, you can set Multiple Float Paths. This setting populates Float Path and
Float Path Order fields. Float Path shows most critical (number 1) and near critical paths (2 to n). Float Path Order shows
task sequence on a given Float Path.

This helps identify paths when there are different task calendars (see above).
It also helps when trying to get a forecast back in the box. I had 10 different paths each causing -1 day float. I killed each one
by
Ordering the task list by Float Path
Taking a day out of Float Path 1 (the most critical)
Rescheduling (meaning the 2 now becomes 1, roughly speaking)
Float Path Order made it easy to establish where a task lay in the sequence. Previously, I had judged using Start and Finish
dates.

Note, taking a duration out of tasks at the beginning of a sequence had more effect than taking duration out of the end of a
sequence.

Units
Units are 'hours worth of work'.
How much work a man can do in an hour (man/hours) or how much pipe can be laid in a day (metres/day).
If task has started then Remaining Duration x Units Per Time = Remaining Units.

Fix, Fiddle & Float

Fixed Units/Time
If you fiddle with Duration, Units will float.

If you fiddle with Units Per Time, Duration will float.

Coding
Primavera asks you to name every project. It is tempting to assign categories (i.e. codes) instead but Primavera only accepts
unique names (see below).

Layouts
This layout shows Float Path 1 to 10 for a selection of similar kinds of work (method statements). Better than just showing
critical work. Yellow is late finish. Black triangle is late baseline.

Percent Complete
Some notes lifted from:
http://www.pmsite.com/Forum/tabid/159/aft/1140/Default.aspx
Schedule Percent
Program calculates this percent complete (pc) as you start to schedule your programme. it gives you the planned pc of each
activity as of schedule date. You can not edit it.
Activity Percent Complete
In p6 there are 3 ways to enter an Activity Percent Complete. These are Duration Percent Comp, Physical Percent Complete
and Units Percent Complete. P6 prompts you to choose one of them. According to the pc type that you choose, p6 reflects
corresponding values in Activity Percent Complete column as well.
You can add the column Percent Complete Type to know which pc is feeding Activity pc.

This is the activity percent complete that you are familiar with in p3. when you enter it, p6 automatically calculates everything
including resource units but you should adjust your settings under project tab to link duration pc to units pc.
% Duration Complete seems to be calculated using Orignal Duration and Float whereas I want it to calculate % Complete as
a proportion of duration At Complete.
Physical Percent Complete
This is specially used when you measure an activities progress using steps. This pc type doesn't calculate remaining
duration automatically. you should enter it manually.
Physical % Complete for Level of Effort tasks is not automatically updated.
Units Percent Complete
This is used to enter progress of you resource units and better to use it when you have a resource driven schedule.

Import / Export
In order to import .xls you must be a 'project superuser'. Go to Admin > Users (find your name) > Project Access.
If you don't do this then the project that you are trying to import to will not be listed in import dialogue (i.e. it will be blank).

Other Stuff
Remaining Early Start acts like back stop (esp. with progress override) and needs to be reset to same as Start before you
can rebuild duration of task.

Quirks
Often see schedules with Activity % Complete does not reconcile with Activity Status.
For tasks that are 100% and In Progress, tick the Finished box in Status panel.
For tasks that are 0% and In Progress, I have not resolved.
