Definitions
Communication:
o
Is a process of transferring information from one entity to another.
The entity that transmits information is called Sender /Transmitter and the entity that
receives the information is called Receiver.
Wireless Communication:
o
Any form of communication that does not require the transmitter and receiver to be
in physical contact.
Transfer of information over a distance without the use of electrical conductors or
wires.
Electromagnetic wave propagated through free-space:
e.g.: Radar, RF, Microwave, IR.

Mobile Network
o
User can use network services while moving
Users communicate anytime, anywhere, with anyone
Network
o
Is a set of devices (often referred to as nodes) connected by communication
links.

Wireless History
Ancient Communication Systems
o
Flags (semaphore), ...
150 BC smoke signals for communication (Greece)
1794, optical telegraph, claude chappe.
1831, Michael Faraday,
o
1864, James Maxwell,
o
Demonstrated electromagnetic induction
Theory of electromagnetic fields, wave equations
1886, Heinrich Hertz,
o
Demonstrated that rapid variations of electric current could be projected into space in
the form of radio waves similar to those of light and heat.
Discovery of electromagnetic waves

Wireless History
1896, Guglielmo Marconi,
o
Invented the wireless telegraph.
Communication by encoding alphanumeric characters in analog signal
(used Morse code)
1901, Guglielmo Marconi,
o
Sent telegraphic signals across the Atlantic Ocean (~3200 km)
He received the letter "S", telegraphed from England to Newfoundland (Canada).
Used a kite-supported antenna for reception.

Wireless History
First mobile communication systems started in the 40s in the US and in the 50s
in Europe.
1960s: Communications satellites were launched (experimental)
1980s, First generation (1G) cellular networks (commercial)
o
Analog technology, heavy devices, and patchy coverage.
1997, the IEEE approved the world's first WLAN standard, IEEE 802.11
(Wi-Fi - in 1999).
1999, the IEEE set up the 802.16 working group (WiMAX in 2001)

Wireless Broadband
Internet is increasingly a multimedia experience
o
Higher data rates obtainable with broadband wireless technology
Shares same advantages of all wireless services: convenience and
reduced cost
o
o
o
Graphics, video, and audio (need high data rate)
Service can be deployed faster than fixed service
No cost of cable plant
Service is mobile, deployed almost anywhere
