CONCEPT NOTE

CEO FOR A DAY: HOW BUSINESS LEADERS TAKE STRATEGIC DECISIONS

How will you go about making business decisions if you were CEO of a big business?
What sets a CEO apart from a mere techie or a manager?
What skills does a CEO need for better decision-making?
How can you transition from being a hacker or a manager to a CEO?
How would you go about making decisions if you started up your own business?
While business plan competitions, app development workshops and hackathons are crucial
for developing the core skills of student entrepreneurs, the start-up journey poses other
difficult challenges that must be tackled by founders and CEOs along the way such as
contract negotiation, striking business deals, making strategic business decisions, etc.
Superior decision-making skillsets of their CEOs was what led giant corporations such as
Reliance, Apple or Mittal Steel become what they are today. Lack of such skills distinguishes
the career graph of a mere hacker from a successful CEO. On this front, the instinctive
abilities of different entrepreneurs vary significantly, but systematic training can go a long
way in transforming the startup journey of early stage entrepreneurs.
CEOs are required to make decisions in limited time and often with incomplete information
at their disposal what tools can they use to ensure the best outcomes?
Preliminary round for outreach: In association with eDC, IIT-Delhi, iPleaders proposes to
conduct a series of 2 hour workshops, exposing student entrepreneurs to how CEOs use
strategic and legal insights to make better decisions consistently, and how some of the most
successful companies have leapt ahead of their competition due to such CEOs. The
workshops will also address problems faced by CEOs on a day-to-day basis, the factors
which they consider while deciding and how to take timely decisions that protect business
interest, even when limited information is available.
The workshops will be conducted in at least 20 colleges, to enable participation uniformly
across the NCR region. Students who attend the workshop will have an opportunity to

participate in the selection for the final rounds of the CEO for a Day competition at the
IIT-D fest.
Selection Process: Each college workshop will be followed by an online situational test (of
approximately 1 hour) where every participant will be required to answer situation-based
questions under limited time, to measure their effectiveness as a leader. The participants may
be provided access to certain preparatory materials and legal toolkits for attempting the test.
Two top scorers per college will be selected to represent the college in the finals (conducted
at IIT-Delhis annual fest) as a team.
Finals: Final round will be organized as an event at the annual fest in IIT, Delhi. A 1-hour
workshop which is open to all participants in the fest (including participating teams) will be
conducted, followed by the final rounds of the competition. Shortlisted candidates from the
preliminary rounds will be provided 5 situational problems on identification of key strategic
issues for their business, negotiation, tackling regulatory issues surrounding a startup and
how to address commercial interest of the business in specific situations.
Judges: Teams will be judged by a 3-member panel, comprising a corporate lawyer, an angel
investor and a startup CEO.
Prize: The winning team will get access to free courses from iPleaders worth INR 20,000,
consultancy from a leading incubator on starting up with a chance to pitch for incubation and
a cash prize of INR 10,000.
