100 WINS: With last years victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup,
UW head coach Chris Petersen reached his 100th career victory. At the time,
it put his record at 100-17, meaning that it took him 117 career games to reach
his 100th victory. Only four coaches in major college history did it faster:
Gil Dobie (N. Dakota St., UW, Navy, Cornell): 108 games
George Woodruff (Penn): 109 games
Bud Wilkinson (Oklahoma): 111 games
Fielding Yost (Neb., Kansas, Stanford, San Jose St., Michigan): 114 games
Chris Petersen (Boise State, Washington): 117 games
Knute Rockne (Notre Dame): 117 games
Additionally, Petersens 117 games were fewer than any ACTIVE FBS coach
required to make it to 100 victories. Here are the top five:
Chris Petersen: 117 games
Urban Meyer: 118 games
Bob Stoops: 122 games
Gary Patterson: 128 games
Steve Spurrier: 129 games
PETERSEN TOPS LIST: The 2015 NCAA record book lists the top active FBS

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board last season, the Husky
coaching staff obviously included mostly new faces. However, all of them
are back for year two (see next note for more on that). Of the nine full-time
coaches on the 2015 staff, six came to the UW from Boise State along with
Petersen after 2013. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersens staff in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as
coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked
at his alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive
line coach Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 seasons prior to last year
coaching in Boise (he coached at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with
Petersen seven of eight seasons. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on Petersens Broncos staff during Petersens
entire eight seasons, though he started as director of operations. He coached
running backs his last five years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory came to Washington having spent the previous four
seasons at Boise State. He was the defensive coordinator at California from
2002 to 2009 and, along with also having coached at Boise State in 2001,
has also worked in the conference at Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the
Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State for
Petersens last two seasons. Previously an offensive coordinator at Montana,
he continued in that role (along with QBs) at Washington. Defensive backs
coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersens DBs coach in Boise
the last two years there, having spent five seasons in the NFL before that.
Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen for his first
six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at Montana,
Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida the previous two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Jeff
Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from 2006
through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in 2013.
Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from prior to 2014 is
tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in 2013 after
having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he was also in
charge of tight ends. Three of the UWs four graduate assistant coaches are
new in 2015, with Joshua Taufalele the only returner. Taufalale, a former New
Mexico lineman, helps with the o-line. New to the GA staff are former Boise
State receiver Kirby Moore, former Stanford defensive back Terrence Brown
and former Kansas State linebacker Hansen Sekona.
STAFF CONTINUITY: Washingtons entire full-time coaching staff remained
in tact following the 2014 season, which was coach Chris Petersens first at
the UW. He, along with all nine full-time assistants, are back in 2015. Thats
actually rare in UW history as the coaching staffs have gone unchanged over
two or more seasons only twice before (UW records for coaching staffs go
back to the mid-1950s): 1989-90 and 2009-11.
Huskies vs. Golden Bears History: Washington and California are
the only two teams that have played in what is now the Pac-12 Conference in
every season since the league was founded in 1916. As that would indicate,
theyve played one another quite often. The Huskies hold a 53-38-4 record in the
all-time series, which began in 1904. Last year in Berkeley, a 100-yard fumble
return from Shaq Thompson and an 86-yard pass to John Ross were the key
plays in a 31-7 Husky win. In 2013 in Seattle, UW earned a 41-17 victory behind
241 rushing yards from Bishop Sankey and 376 passing from Keith Price. Both
accounted for two TDs. In 2012, the UW earned a 21-13 win thanks largely to
second-half TDs from Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Sankey. In 2011 in Seattle,
the Huskies held on a late goalline stand to preserve a 31-23 victory as Price
threw for three TDs in the Pac-12 opener. In 2010 in Berkeley, the Huskies beat
the Bears, 16-13, on the final play of the game, a one-yard run from Chris Polk.
In 2009, the Huskies closed out their season with a 42-10 win over the Bears
in Seattle. Jake Locker passed for 248 yards and three TDs and rushed for 77
and two more scores. In 2008, Cal won in Berkeley, in another season finale as
Jahvid Best ran for 311 yards and four TDs on only 19 carries in a 48-7 Bears
win. In 2007, the 37-23 Husky victory broke a streak of five straight Cal wins
in the series. Prior to that five-game losing streak, the Huskies had won 19
consecutive games in the series, a streak that began with a 50-31 win in 1977.
Before 2002, the last Cal win had come in 1976. Cal and UW first met in 1904,

TEAM NOTES
battling to a 6-6 tie in a game played in Seattle. In both 1915 and 1916, they
played one another twice each year, with unbeaten Gil Dobies Washington
team sweeping the four games. In 1917, Cal broke the UWs 63-game unbeaten
streak (still an NCAA record) with a 27-0 win in Berkeley. Other big games in the
series include the 1937 game, when the unranked Huskies held No. 1 Cal to a 0-0
tie in Seattle. In 1991, the Bears probably came as close as anyone to beating
Washington that national championship season, as Mike Pawlawskis last-gasp
pass into the endzone was batted down in a 24-17 UW win. Washington has
also posted four of its nine biggest comebacks in history against California. The
biggest ever was in 1988, when the Dawgs trailed 27-3 before rallying to win,
28-27. In 1981, Washington was down 21-0 in the third quarter before coming
back for a 27-26 victory. A 20-point comeback in 1993 (24-23) and a 14-point
rally in 1999 (31-27) also rank on the list. In 2001, the Huskies trailed 21-7 in
the first quarter, but came back to earn a 31-28 victory in Berkeley.
Washington-California ties: Washington assistant head coach and
linebackers coach Bob Gregory spent eight seasons as defensive coordinator
at California (2002-09) while Washington director of football operations Mike
McHugh held the same spot at Cal for 10 seasons. Bears assistant director of
operations Zachary Reed worked in a similar role at the UW before moving to
Berkeley in 2013. UW secondary coach Jimmy Lake and Cals Greg Burns, also
a DBs coach, were on the same staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006.
Finally, Cal nutritionist Suzanne Nelson once held the same position at the UW.
Cals roster lists four players from the state of Washington: QB Andrew Black
(Spokane), QB Ross Bowers (Bothell), LB Devante Downs (Mountlake Terrace)
and DE Cameron Saffle. Bowers is the son of UW head gymnastics coach Joanne
Bowers. Washingtons roster includes numerous Californians, including 14 from
Northern California: Jake Browning (Granite Bay), Ben Burr-Kirven (Menlo Park),
K.J. Carta-Samuels (Saratoga), Brian Clay (Vacaville), Darrell Daniels (Pittsburg),
Jomon Dotson (American Canyon), Travis Feeney (Richmond), Derek Hunter
(Portola Valley), Logan Hurst (Loomis), Kevin King (San Leandro), Scott Lawyer
(San Jose), Elijah Qualls (Petaluma), Tony Rodriguez (Stockton), Neel Salukhe
(San Jose), Jason Scrempos (Milpitas) and Vita Vea (Milpitas).
Huskies vs. Bay Area Schools: Washington has a combined, all-time
record of 106-79-8 vs. opponents from the San Francisco Bay Area. Washington
is 53-38-4 against Cal, 41-40-4 vs. Stanford, 10-0 vs. San Jose State, 1-1 vs.
St. Marys and 1-0 vs. Santa Clara. The Huskies havent played Santa Clara
since 1935 and St. Marys since 1947. Since 1977, UW is 56-15-0 vs. Bay Area
teams: 26-5 vs. Cal, 22-10 vs. Stanford and 8-0 vs. San Jose State.
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah
and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest
schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current
plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the
other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face
UCLA or Arizona State. In 2013 and 14, the Huskies didnt face Utah or USC.
This year, neither UCLA nor Colorado are on the UW schedule.
CAPTAINS: Washington elected six captains for the season, all seniors: TB
Deontae Cooper, OLB Travis Feeney, QB Jeff Lindquist, WR Jaydon Mickens,
OL Siosifa Tufunga, DL Taniela Tupou. The UW will also utilize one game captaion for each weeks contest. Heres a list of game-by-game captains:
Boise State: Cory Littleton
California: Joshua Perkins
ACADEMIC SUCCESSES
Washingtons APR (Academic Progress Rate) for football has gone up every
year for the last four years in a row: 946 in 2009-10; 949 in 2010-11; 954
in 2011-12; 967 in 2012-13; 977 in 2013-14.
Washingtons most recent APR (977) ranked No. 2 in the Pac-12 Conference,
trailing only Stanford (987).
Three UW teams led the Pac-12 in APR in the most recent survey, while
eight other UW programs ranked second in the conference.
The UW football team has four returning players who earned some level of
Academic All-Pac-12 last season: first-teamer Jake Eldrenkamp (3.65 in business administration); second-teamer Siosifa Tufunga (3.31 in American ethnic
studies); second-teamer Trevor Walker (3.48, pre-arts & sciences); honorable
mention Jeff Lindquist (3.47 in business administration).
Washingtons team grade point average for spring, 2015 quarter (the most
recently completed full academic period) was 3.08, highest in UW football
history. Nine individual football players made the Deans List for spring,
2015. In total, 121 UW student-athletes made the Deans List last spring and
67 percent of all student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.00 or better. Seventeen
teams had a team GPA of 3.00 or better.
