Polygons in EMF Problems

1. A polygon is a plane figure bounded by straight lines. A regular polygon has all sides and angles equal. 2. The area of a regular polygon of n sides can be calculated in different ways depending on whether the length of a side, radius of inscribed circle, or radius of circumscribed circle is given. 3. Key formulas include: - Area = na2/4 * Cot(180/n) when side length a is given - Area = nr2 * Tan(180/n) when inscribed radius r is given - Area = nR2/2 * Sin(360/n) when circumscribed radius R is given The document provides definitions of

Chapter 12
Area of Polygons
12.1

Polygon
A plane figure bounded by a number of straight lines is called
polygon. A polygon is said to be regular when all its sides and
angles are equal.
A five sided polygon is called a pentagon.
A six sided polygon is called a hexagon.
A seven sided polygon is called a heptagon.
A eight sided polygon is called an octagon.
A nine sided polygon is called a nonagon.
A ten sided polygon is called a decagon.
A twelve sided polygon is called a dodecagon.
Inscribed Polygon
If a circle passes through the corners of a polygons then this
polygon is called inscribed polygon and the circle is called the
circumscribed circle. If the inscribed polygon is a regular polygon the
centre of the circle is also the centre of the polygon. In the figure o is the
centre of the polygon and OF is the radius of the circumscribed circle and
is denoted by R.

Fig.
Circumscribed Polygon:
Fig.1
A polygon which is drawn outside a circle so that the sides touch
circumferences of the circle. In this case circle is called inscribed circle. If
the polygon is regular then the centre of the circle is also the centre of the
polygon. The radius of the inscribed circle is denoted by r in the figure

Method for Finding Area of Regular Polygon

A regular polygon can be divided into equal isosceles triangles by
joining all the corners to the centre. Obviously, the number of triangle is
the same as the number of sides of the polygon, then the area of the
polygon is equal to the area of any one triangle multiplied by the number
of triangle.
(i) Area of the Regular Polygon of n sides when length of a side
is given:
Let, AB = a be the length of the side of regular polygon of n sides,
o be the centre of the polygon, we formed n similar triangles.

Let, AOB be one of the n triangles.

Then <AOB =
