Anti-Poverty Day 2012

Akhuwat's 'Anti-Poverty Day' being held on the 28th
April, 2012 will be marked by a global vigil to symbolize the
journey of change ignited by the people who have pledged their
solidarity with the poor. On this day, we will celebrate the spirit
of brotherhood that binds us together in a universal bond of
compassion and generosity.
They invite us to play our part along with thousands of others
around the world and light a candle at 7:30 p.m. the movement
against poverty. Each ray of light will represent a vow of
solidarity with the poor and hope that this day, the light of
change burns brighter than ever.
LAHORE - Worlds largest interest free microfinance organization Akhuwat will organize a
human chain to mark the Anti Poverty Day from Jail Road to Mall Road on April 28.
Over the past decade Akhuwat has established itself as the globes major microfinance
organization and its achievements were acknowledged by Harvard University earlier this
month. The sheer amount of loans and their return ratio has become the subject of
international academic research. Akhuwat has disbursed loans worth almost two billions with
a whopping 99.8 per cent loan return ratio.
Despite Akhuwat keeping a low international profile, Harvard University invited Akhuwats
executive chairman Dr. Amjad Saqib for a series of lectures. The Harvard Universitys
Schools of Business, Law and Public Affairs separately invited Dr. Amjad Saqib for lectures.

Dr. Amjad Saqib is a KEMC graduate and a former DMG officer. He later became an
accomplished writer and dedicated his life to eradicating poverty in Pakistan.
Lahore will mark the beginning of a series of Vigils to be organized across the globe in which
the spirit of brotherhood and volunteerism will be promoted. The participants will carry
candles and form a human chain to spread the message that the leviathan of poverty in
Pakistan can be overcome by trust, volunteerism and a desire to help others. Similar Vigils
will be organized in leading cities across the country. Some international cities most notably
Cardfiff, Manchester, New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Toronto will also host the
events.

Rise for Pakistan

3

It is an initiative for the young and young at heart who have the courage, energy and
commitment to make this world a better place. We believe in social, economic and political
equality of all human beings regardless of race, religion, gender or ethnicity. We believe that
the only way for humanity to move forward is for people to cooperate rather than compete
with each other. This earth produces enough resources to support all people if only we can
find an equitable system for their distribution. It does not have to be a zero sum game. We
are seeing increasing income disparity all over the world due to flawed financial systems.
Concentration of power and money in a few hands has made an average person a tool to be
used to promote vested interests. While we want to change the world, we have to start where
we live.

World Teachers' Day 2012

Lahore - The World Teachers
Day is being celebrated today
(Wednesday) across the country
and in more than a 100 countries
around the world, to pay tribute to teachers for their contribution in educating generations
and ensuring progress of society. The day will be observed under the theme Teachers for
Gender Equality.
Teachers' Day is now one of the occasions that is looked forward by the teachers and
students alike as on this occasion its not only when teachers are praised but also around
various schools students dress up as a representation of their teachers and take various
lectures that are assigned to the teachers they represent. As the day passes the students
perform the regular activities that are performed by the teachers. On this day students realize
what it means to be a teacher and what it means to control the future of several students in
their classes and also teachers are reminded what it felt like when they were the students.
In order to celebrate this special day different programs, seminars and walks would be held
in the city to highlight the role of teachers in society. The day would focus on the need to
ensure equality in educational policies for millions of female teachers.

department. In which VIS department has allocated few teachers to each student to made
teachers day cards by them self and then delivered it to teachers and capture that precious
moment.

Key Learnings
The key learnings that we got from our volunteer work experience are as follows:
1. We came to know how different NGOs are playing their role for the betterment of the
society by providing their services free of cost. We came to know about this in the antipoverty vigil on canal, which was organized by AKHUWAT.
2. During our volunteer work we learned how to deliver effective message to the general
public. This was a great exposure for us. We had to deliver some sort of message in
almost all of our campaigns.
3. We got experience how public thinks of you when you ask them for their social and
societal issues, they really encourage and respect you for the cause.
4. One of things we learnt is meeting deadlines and coordinating different activities in a
group. This experience was earned in the petition signing campaigns, when we were
supposed to work in the form of groups within a specific span of time.
5. These activities also boosted our confidence level as these activities are not easy. It is
difficult to convince a person and bringing him to take part in an activity.
6. I got the chance to develop new skills, and put into practice my existing skills.
7. We gained a lot of experience from these activities and this will definitely help me in
improving our CV.
8. We got experience of working in a different environment. It will definitely help us in our
future practical life.
9. We got a chance to develop our networking skills by making new friends and
developing contacts as we were working with new people and also in groups.
