experiments in the SGC Basic Engineering Laboratories for

Within a role play the complex machinery operation is practiced by the students
working in a team.
Watch groups are formed and a realistic ship engine operation is realised
under utilization of the training engine room and other technical labs of the SGC.
In cooperation with the study colleagues and instructors of the SGC, the students
fulfil complex tasks of ship operation with coupled simulators.
The Ship Machinery Laboratory training includes the utilization of the following

Electrical machines:
General basics: constructive types, mechanism of the energy conversion,
losses and efficiency, warming, modes of operation;
Construction, electric and magnetic processes, operational behaviour,
Application of direct current, asynchronous machines and synchronous
machines as well as transformers;
Faults, malfunctions, maintenance of electrical machines;
Electrical drives and power electronics:
Electrical drives: Analysis of the control processes and running
processes, characteristic diagrams and control possibilities, structures of
electrical control systems and drive systems, direct current drives and
three-phase current drives, electrical brakes and couplings, electrical
valve controls, operational faults, power electronics, construction
elements, circuits, control devices, protective facilities, net repercussions,
operational faults, control and regulation of electrical drives, well-chosen
current rectifier circuits for electrical drives and electronic exciter facilities
for generators;
Lab exercises:
Preventive measures in electrical plants I and II, transformer I and II,
direct current motor, three-phase current asynchronous machine I and II,
three-phase current synchronous machine I and II, fault finding in
electrical machines, parallel operation of three-phase current
synchronous generators, construction elements of the power electronics,
net-extinguished current rectifier, Voltage system converter I and II,
controlled electrical drive.
Target Qualification
The construction and the fundamental behaviour of electrical machines
and equipment as well as power-electronic plants are treated. The
graduate is enabled to assess the incorporation of the electrical
machines, equipment and plants into the complete systems, to operate,
to monitor, to maintain as well as to remove malfunctions.

Personal protection and plant protection, national and international
regulations on the establishment, approval and operation of electrical
plants, operation management, comissioning and operation management
of the electrical plants, operation management of the electrical plants
under fault conditions, electric energy supply in emergency operation and
accident situations, floating frequency operation of the electric net,
medium voltage net, design of electrical plants and operational means,
switch devices, cables and wires, energy distribution systems, types of
lay, net construction, low and medium voltage nets, basic circuits,
selectivity, parameter setting, power balance, accumulators, sources of
light and lighting systems, shaft generator plants, emergency power
supply, protective facilities and monitoring facilities
Electrical ship propulsion systems:
National and international regulations on the establishment, approval and
operation of electric ship drives, protective facilities and monitoring
facilities
Lab exercises:
Control circuits, shaft generator plant, fault finding in electrical plants I
and II, exercises on the ship machinery simulator I to IV.
Target Qualification
The construction and the fundamental behaviour of electrical machines
and equipment as well as electrical and power-electronic plants are
treated. The graduate is enabled to operate, monitor and to maintain the
complete system as an electrical instructed person under consideration of
the regulations.

System-theoretical basics and general requirements on automation
devices and process control systems; operation amplifier and
analogous data processing; project engineering and programming of
memory-programmable controls (SPS); adaptive control and extreme
systems; Fuzzy controls; electromagnetic compatibility and reliability of
automation devices;
Application examples for the process automation by means of
modern SPS in the ship operation technology, specific for the
course of studies (e.g., decentralised process controls for the
automation of machinery plants; complex engine monitoring plants and
alarm systems; safety systems; logic modules and memoryprogrammable controls for the process automation; optimum control of
machinery plants);
Lab and simulator exercises.
Target Qualification
Based on the fundamentals of the measuring and control technology, the
scientific-technical fundamentals of the automation technology are dealt
with including generalization capable application examples.

System-theoretical fundamentals and application examples of the
ship automation:
Process interfaces to the control and monitoring of ship plants;

ship machinery plants;
Field bus systems and visualisation systems;
Construction and function of decentralised process stations and process
control systems,
Application examples for the process automation in the ship
operation technology, specific for the course of studies, e.g.: Control
and monitoring of main propulsion plants with fix propeller or pitch
propeller; automation of electrical power generation plants, boiler plants,
pump arrangements and compressors; complex engine monitoring plants
and alarm systems as well as safety systems; optimum control of ship
machinery plants and adaptive systems; opeartion and maintenance of
process lcontrol systems.

Target Qualification
Based on the module "Automation Technology I", the scientific
fundamentals and generalization capable application examples of the
ship automation are dealt with. By this, the StAK qualification
requirements for control technology are fulfilled.
