B. Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) V Semester

MEE-304- Turbo machines
School of Mechanical/Chemical Engineering
1. Prove that the maximum diagram efficiency of a stage of a reaction steam turbine is given
2 cos 2
1 cos 2
by the expression,
, = angle of absolute velocity at inlet.
2. Explain the methods of reducing the speed of steam turbine. Also explain reheat factor

and stage efficiency.

3. What is meant by compounding of steam turbines and what are the different methods of
compounding? Explain, with the help of neat sketch, in brief. What is the basic purpose
of governing of steam turbines?
4. Explain the term Reheat Factor. For six-stage turbine find out the reheat factor with the
help of H-S plot and prove that internal efficiency = Stage etffciency x Reheat factor of
the turbine.
5. What is principle of operation of steam turbine? Define degree of reaction.
6. Data pertaining to Impulse turbine is as follows: Steam velocity = 500 m/sec , blade
speed = 200 m/sec , exit angle of moving blade = 25o , nozzle angle = 20o . Neglecting the
effect of friction when passing through the blades, Determine (i) Tangential force (ii)
Power required (iii) Blade efficiency (iv) Specific steam consumption.
7. Consider a gas turbine working on Brayton cycle. The air enters the compressor at 0.15
MPa and 20oC. The maximum pressure and temperature of the cycle are 1.2 MPa and
1200oC. Calculate pressure and temperature at each point in the cycle and cycle
efficiency and turbine work for following two cases:
(i)
Theoretical Brayton cycle
(ii)
Actual Brayton cycle with turbine and compressor efficiency of 0.85 each.
8. Discuss the effect of inlet pressure and temperature of steam in Rankine cycle. Write
advantages of reheating of the steam and at what pressure (in terms of initial pressure)
reheating is generally done to obtain best results.
9. Determine the maximum blade efficiency and blade speed to steam velocity ratio of a DeLaval turbine. The turbine has nozzle angle of 20o, symmetrical blades, blade velocity
coefficient of 0.85 and actual blade efficiency as 90% of maximum blade efficiency. Also
define reheat factor and discuss its relevance with the help of h-s diagram

10. Explain the differences between impulse and reaction turbine. Also define speed ratio and
stage efficiency of the turbine.
11. Explain various methods of improving the efficiency of a gas turbine working on a
simple Brayton cycle with the help of neat sketches.
12. State the merits and demerits of open and closed cycle gas turbine over open cycle. What
are different methods by which performance of a gas turbine cycle can be improved?
13. Discuss with the help of graph the variation of specific output with pressure ratio at
various maximum cycle temperatures for a gas turbine plant.
14. Prove that optimum pressure ratio for maximum specific out for a gas turbine plant is
given by
15. A steam turbine working on Rankine cycle is supplied with dry satuated steam at 25 bar
and the exhaust takes place at 0.2 bar. For a steam flow rate of 10 kg/see, determine for a
theoretical cycle:
(a) Quality of steam at end of expansion,
(b) Turbine shaf work
(c) Power required to drive the pump,
(d) Work ratio
(e) Rankine efficiency.
