Inch/Metric Threaded Hole Depth: A B (Full Threads)

This document provides guidelines for determining the minimum recommended tap drill length when machining threaded holes. It states that the depth of a threaded hole must exceed the length of section A in order to produce full threads without needing specialized tooling. Section A represents the tapered section at the beginning of a tap that does not cut usable threads. The document includes tables listing the nominal thread size, length of section A, and minimum recommended length for full threads for both inch and metric threaded holes. Drawings should specify the depth of full threads but not the tap drill depth, which is determined by the machinist.

Inch/Metric Threaded Hole Depth

This guide establishes the recommended minimum tap drill length in order
to have a maximum amount of full threads. The depth of a threaded hole
beyond the length of letter A requires special tooling. The taper at the
beginning of the tap, does not produce useable full form threads. This is
why the tap drill is longer, otherwise a more costly bottom tap is required.
The thread depth stated on the drawing is the depth of full form threads.
The drawing should not specify a tap drill depth because the machinist will
make the tap drill deep enough to meet the full thread requirement.
