This document presents the results and the details of the methodology adopted to interpret the
site-specific CPT tests in order to determine the tentative top of competent strata and toe depths of
permanent DCM clusters.
1. Introduction
Penta Ocean China State Dong-Ah JV was appointed by the Airport Authority for the Deep
Cement Mixing (DCM) Works (Package 1) for Hong Kong International Airport's Three-Runway
System Project (3RS) under Contract No. 3201. The JV have appointed Benaim Limited as their
geotechnical consultant to support the construction works.
2. Objective
This document presents the results and the details of the methodology adopted to interpret the
site-specific CPT tests in order to determine the tentative top of competent strata and toe
depths of permanent DCM clusters.
3. Basis of Analysis
CPT profiles were interpreted in accordance with the 7 step procedure detailed in the following
document:

Determination of Competent Stratum for DCM Embedment
A total of 236 Nos. of site-specific existing CPT profiles were analysed to determine the top of
competent strata and DCM embedment depths at these locations. The Ccommercially available
software Surfer 13 was used to develop contoured surfaces for the top of competent strata and
DCM toe levels across the C3201 site were developed for the following zones:
LTP zone A
LTP zone B
DCM beneath sloping seawall
Transition zones
The contours were developed using the Kriging method of interpolation, typical for this data
interpretation step. These contours were subsequently
used to evaluate the tentative top of competent stratum and DCM toe depth for each
permanent cluster under C-3201 using commercially available GIS software, ArcMap 10.1.
Drawings BEN/3201/001 to 004 in Attachment 1 show the works area plan, the DCM zoning plan, the
CPT layout plan and the DCM layout plan respectively.

4. Results
A key plan of contoured surfaces in presented in BEN/3201/005. Contoured surfaces for the top of
competent stratum and DCM toe levels for each DCM zone and sub-areas are presented in
drawings BEN/3201/010 to 0044 in Attachment 1.
The results for the tentative top of competent stratum and DCM toe depth for each permanent
cluster under C-3201 are presented in Attachment 2.
