IEP Assignment
1. Disability
From the students IEP and rule 51 it appears as if the student
has a specific learning disability in written expression. On the students
IEP it says he struggles from written expression and organizing
information and transferring thoughts into written words. Rule 51
states, In the category of specific learning disability the child must
have a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes
involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that
may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, read, write,
spell.
2. Strengths and Characteristics of this Student
The student has many strengths including working well in one on
one situation and when praised, his attendance has improved and has
strengths with word recognition strategies. On the behavioral side he is
polite to adults and takes responsibility for his behaviors and decisions.
As a mathematics content teacher I would build on his strength to work
well when praised to build his self-esteem, productiveness, and control.
I think providing structure in my classroom will help the student
become better at the characteristics he needs to improve his written
expression learning disability. Although it is not directly affective of my
mathematics classroom this will help the student in other classrooms
where it is more affected.
3. Teacher Concerns
If I was this students content teacher I would be concerned about
his ability to write up solutions and answers in class because writing is
imperative to the communication of learning. I would also be
concerned about his ability to keep up with the notes during the
lectures.
4. Accommodations
I would choose to put these accommodations in place:
calendar/assignment book, teacher provides notes/outlines, and oral
cues and prompts. I chose these accommodations based on the
students priority needs listed in the IEP. I chose the
calendar/assignment book to help the student with organization skills
and completing and turning in assignments on time. The provided
notes and outlines would help the student to keep up during lectures
due to his struggles with written expression. The oral cues and prompts
will help the student fulfill the needs of the student to stay on task in a
structured environment.
5. Reactions
I think the materials were useful because they outlined all of the
students needs, which provided me as a teacher to develop a plan of
action for the classroom. I think I could contribute to similar
documents on students in my future.
