Installing Nagios XI with VMware Workstation Player
XI This document is intended to outline the steps required to install Nagios XI
within VMware Workstation Player. Want installation help? We will do it for free.
1. Click on Download Now under Microsoft.
2. Click Download Now under Open
Virtualization Format.
3. Add your information to the form and click
Continue.
Why? This will give you the chance to receive
fantastic resources on Nagios XI, helping you
get the most out of your trial.

4. Your download will begin in the lower left hand
corner of your browser. This is the Nagios XI OVA
file.
5. Click Download VMware Workstation Player.
Why? Nagios XI natively runs on Linux. Since
youre installing Nagios XI on Windows, youll
need a virtual machine. VMware Workstation
Player is a virtual machine that does the heavy
lifting for you to complete your install.
6. A new tab will open up taking you to VMware.
com. This is where you can download the virtual
machine VMware Workstation Player.

7. Click Download Now under VMware
Workstation 12.5 Player for Windows 64-bit.
The download will begin in the lower left hand
corner of your browser.
8. Run setup wizard for VMware Workstation.
9. Open VMware Workstation Player from your
desktop.

10. Click on Player -> File -> Open.
11. Click on the OVA file from your downloads
folder.
12. Name your virtual machine whatever you like.
Click Import.

13. The OVA file will begin importing.
14. Once it has imported, youll be able edit
virtual machine settings.
Why? The reasoning here is to make sure that
you can get the most out of your virtual
machine when it is running Nagios XI.
15.The default memory will be 1 GB.

16. It is recommended to up it to 2 GB. You
should see 2048 MB above.
Why? This allows more memory to your virtual
machine. If you are monitoring a lot of devices,
it will keep you from maxing this out too quickly
and still run well.
17. The default amount of processors is also only
one.
18. It is recommended to also add a second
processor to run Nagios XI. Click OK when
done.This gives a little more power to your 60
day trial.

19.Click Play virtual machine. This will boot up
Nagios XIs login prompt.
20. Youll see the player turn to black and begin
loading at the bottom.
21. The final step in VMware Workstation Player
is to login. Youll see the login credentials
highlighted here.

22. Click in the window and type root for the
login. Press ENTER on your keyboard. Keep in
mind, when in the VMware Workstation Player
your mouse will not be visible. To release your
mouse, hold down CTRL + ALT. Your mouse will
then become available to you. To type back in
VMware Workstation Player, you will first have to
click the window.
23. Type nagiosxi for the password. When
typing you will not see the characters show up.
When finished, press ENTER on your keyboard.
24. The following screen will show up. It is
important to note that your IP address will be
different. Make sure you use the IP address
shown in your VMware Workstation Player.

25.Open up your preferred web browser. Youll
see Google Chrome here. This is where you
would type in your specific IP address (found in
VMware Workstation Player, just below the
Nagios XI banner) and type it into the search bar.
Hit ENTER on your keyboard when done.
26. Youre now able to access Nagios XI. Click
the button to configure General Program
Settings.
27. In the Nagios XI Installer you can configure
your name, email address, password and choose
your time zone. Once all of your changes have
been made, click Install.

28. Congratulations! You have successfully
installed Nagios XI. Here youll see your
login information. It will be different than you
see here, depending on the configurations you
made on the previous screen. It is important that
you know your username and password
intimately before clicking Login to Nagios XI.
You will be prompted to log in on the following
page.
29. Here is the login page.
30. Insert your login credentials from the
previous page into the login box. The default
language for Nagios XI is English. If you speak
another language, it will benefit you to choose
that language on this page as well. Click Login.

31. In order to access the Nagios XI Dashboard,
youll have to read the license agreement and
click Submit.
32. Thats it! You have successfully installed
Nagios XI and can being monitoring. There are
some great videos and resources to help you get
started on Nagios.com.
