PUG MILLS / PADDLE MIXERS
Design & Principles of Operation
The pug mill, also commonly referred to as a paddle mixer, is ideal for bulk mixing applications involving
heavy-duty materials such as sludges.
The pug mill design is based on a horizontal U-type trough with dual shafts and
paddles extending the length of the trough. The action of the pitched
paddles moves the material from the bottom of the trough up the middle,
and forces the material back down the sides. This creates a kneading
and folding over effect, which gives an intimate mixture of materials. A
liquid spray system for dispersing a binder may also be added for con-
ditioning and agglomerating applications.
Typical applications for the pug mill:
MIXING AGGLOMERATION CONDITIONING
FGD Scrubber Sludge Agricultural Chemicals Fly Ash
Fly Ash Fertilizers Cement or Lime Kiln Dust
Lime for SO2 Neutralization Pesticides Foundry Dust
Municipal Sludge Chemical Consumer Products Iron-Oxide
Pigments & Dyes Carbon Powders Friction Material Waste
Woodchips for Composting Flue Dust Lead Fume
Facilities Zinc Oxide
