Hydrostatics Tutorial Problems

This document provides 10 practice problems related to hydrostatics and fluid mechanics. It begins with questions calculating pressure at different depths in water and for different sized surfaces. It then asks about determining the radius of a piston used in a hydraulic jack lifting a car. Further questions involve calculating the pressure and force required to lift objects using hydraulic systems of different piston sizes. The document defines Pascal's principle and Archimedes' principle and asks for examples. It concludes with problems calculating pressure and buoyant force at different ocean depths and for objects floating in water.

Tutorial 2 Hydrostatics

1. A force of 90 N is applied on a square surface with a length of 0.05 m. How much pressure is
applied on the surface?
If the same amount of force is applied in a smaller square with a side equal to 0.025 m, how
much pressure does it experience? (6 marks)

2. (a) Calculate the pressure at a depth of 110 cm from the surface of a lake. (Water density =
1000 kgm-3) (3 marks)
(b) Figure 1 below shows a hydraulic jack used to lift a car which has a mass of 1600 kg. A and
B are two pistons with round surfaces. If the surface area of B is 130 cm2 and the force F
supplied to lift the car is 60 N, determine the radius of A surface. (6 marks)

Figure 1

3. The piston of a hydraulic automobile lift is 0.30 m in diameter. How much pressure is required
to lift a car with a mass of 800 kg? (3 marks)

4. The small piston of a hydraulic lift has an area of 0.20 m2. A car weighing 1.60 x 104 N sits
on a rack mounted on the large piston. The large piston has an area of 0.90 m2. How large a force
must be applied to a small piston to support the car?

5. Define the following and gives a simple example of each principle used in our daily life.
(a) Pascals principle
(b) Archimedes principle (4 marks)

6. Calculate the absolute pressure at an ocean depth of 1.00 x 103 m. Assume that the density of
the water is 1.025 x 103 kg/m3 and that Po = 1.01 x 105 Pa. (4 marks)
7. A basketball floats in a bathtub of water. The ball has a mass of 0.5 kg and a diameter of 22
cm.
(a) What is the buoyant force? (3 marks)
(b) What is the volume of water displaced by the ball? (3 marks)
(c) What is the average density of the basketball? (3 marks)
8. Water ice has a density of 0.91 g/cm, so it will float in liquid water. Imagine you have a cube
of ice, 10 cm on a side. (10 marks)
(a) What is the cube's weight?
(b) What volume of liquid water must be displaced in order to support the floating cube?
(c) How much of the cube is under the surface of the water?

9. (a) State the different between Gauge Pressure and Absolute Pressure. (2 marks)

10. A piece of metal weighs 7.84 N in air and 6.86 N when completely immersed in water.
What is the buoyant force? What is the density () of the object? (5 marks)
