Rebar Tensile Strength Testing

1. The document describes an experiment to test the tensile strength of an 8mm diameter steel rebar using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). 2. A 10-inch long sample of 8mm rebar was clamped into the UTM and tested until failure. The maximum force exerted was 12.69kN. 3. Calculations determined the tensile strength of the rebar to be 252.29MPa based on its cross-sectional area and the maximum force measured.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To know how to test the strength of a given rebar
2. To determine the tensile strength of a rebar using the UTM machine

MATERIALS:
- One (1) 8mm diameter rebar x 10inches long

PROCEDURE:
Buy a 8mm diameter rebar and precut it to 10 inches
Turn on your UTM
Clamp your rebar on the UTM by adjusting the jaws of the cross-head of the
machine

Setup the UTM on testing tensile strength

Begin testing and record the maximum tensile force exerted by the
machine before failing
Remove the rebar that is separated in half on the UTM

Remove any debris (if there is any)

Turn off your UTM

GATHERED DATA:
Diamet Cross- Maximum Strength New Length Diameter of
er Sectional Force (mPa) (cm) necking
(mm) Area (m2) (KN) (cm)

Rebar 8 5.03x10^- 12.69 252.29 25.8 0.4

COMPUTATIONS:
Tensile strength = Tension / Area
=(12.69KN) /( ( pi )( 0.008m)^2) / (4))
Tensile strength = 252.29mPa
CONCLUSION:
I therefore conclude that the strength of a rebar will depend greatly on its
diameter. Based on our experiment and the other groups experiment the rebar
can resist greater tension if it has greater diameter and lower tension if it has
lesser diameter. It can be determined using the UTM on tension test. We can
know how much a rebar that we will use in construction and other things can
resist tension stress.
