MESB 443 Tutorial 1
Name: Id No: Section :
1. Calculate the appropriate value of the force of gravity that acts on a mass of 12 kg.
2. Calculate the approximate value of the force of gravity that acts on a mass of 140lb. Express
the results in newtons and in pounds-force.
3. A motor develops a starting torque of 150 N.m. Calculate the braking force needed to
prevent the motor from turning if a pulley on the shaft has a diameter of (a) 1m (b) 1.5m (c)
2.5m
4. A mass of 50kg is lifted to a height of 10m as shown in Figure-2 below. Calculate the work
done.
Figure 2
5. An electric motor lifts a mass of 500kg through a height of 30m in 12 s as shown in Fig-3.
Calculate the power developed by the motor, in kW and in hp.
6. During a prony brake test on an electric motor, the spring scales indicate 25N and 5N
respectively as shown in Fig-4. Calculate the power output if the motor turns at 1700 rpm and
radius of the pulley is 0.1 m.

7. A 150kW electric motor has an efficiency of 92% when it operated at full-load. Calculate the
losses in the machine
8. A flywheel with a moment of inertia of 2.5 kg m2 is initially at rest. If a torque of 5
Nm (counterclockwise) is suddenly applied to the flywheel, what will be the speed
of the flywheel after 5 s? Express that speed in both radians per second and
revolutions per minute.
9. A motor is supplying 60 Nm of torque to its load. If the motor’s shaft is turning at
1500 r/min, what is the mechanical power supplied to the load in watts?
