Forces and Their Consequences: For More Informa On, See

There are four fundamental forces in the universe: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak nuclear, and strong nuclear. Gravity is the least understood force, though we know it is responsible for attraction between massive objects. The electromagnetic force causes attraction and repulsion between charged particles. The weak force is responsible for radioactive decay, and the strong force binds protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei. At very high energies, the electromagnetic and weak forces are theorized to merge into a single electroweak force.

Forces and their Consequences

In the universe there are four fundamental forces:

Gravita onal- Pulls Big Things

Electromagne c- Pulls and Pushes Small Things
Weak Nuclear- Changes Very Small Things Into Other Very Small Things
Strong Nuclear- Holds Protons and Neutrons Together
For more informa on, see this.

There’s one force out of these which we don’t really understand: gravity. Yes, we know
the Universal Gravita onal Constant, which is the same everywhere in the universe1,
but that’s not all there is. There have been many a emts to explain it, from the classical
“things like each other so go towards each other” of Ancient Greece, to Accer on Discs
in Rela vity, to a hypothe cal massless Spin-2 par cle called the Graviton. No one
knows how it works, but we do know that it does work and that’s enough for now.

The Electromagne c Force is… the electromagne c force. It is caused due to protons
and electrons, and there are some things more to it, which are unimportant.

The Weak Force is not that weak. It is, by conven ons, the least like a force. Because…
instead of a rac ng or repelling, it literally changes. Using the weak force, a down quark
can change into an up quark, thus making a neutron to turn into a proton23. This is a
part of nuclear fission4.

The Strong Force holds Protons and Neutrons together. Nothing more to it than that. It
is common knowledge that this is the only force which has a mass, so I won’t discuss
that here. It is carried by Gluons5.

At energy levels above 246 GeV6, a really neat things happen. Since the energy is too
much, the Electromagne c and Weak forces get pushed together and merge7 to form
the Electroweak force. This has led people to theorise that at high enough energies, all
four forces may merge.

Now from the very very small we go to the very very big. Next stop: planets.

1. However, this may not be true. Scien sts have recently observed that the value of
G may actually increase when I am near you.
2. However this only happens with par cles of the same genera on. That is, you can
turn hens into Chicken Popcorn, and turn Chicken Popcorn back into a hen, but
cannot turn it into a goat. (Note: Here, the pronoun you refers to the average
human. It is of course possible that you can do so)

3. This has caused confusion in many students, including the ‘Kong Incident’ which
happened with Piyush.

4. This property of the force has led to its controversial use in Nuclear Bombs. There
have been several public protests against this all over the world, including the one
that coined the popular slogan ‘Ban the Weak Force!’

5. It is rumoured that the Pidilite brand Fevicol has a secret process to manufacture
Gluons, but this has not been confirmed.

6. 246000000000 electron Volts.

7. Something like this.
