Parsec 3

The document discusses the theoretical properties of a small asteroid with a radius of 1.85m that would have the same mass as all humans on Earth if it had Earth's gravity. It also examines the logistical challenges of surviving on such an asteroid, estimating how long a small group could last growing food and eating chickens in confined spaces. Finally, it performs some hypothetical calculations around the erosion of mountains by bird visits and comments on units cancelling out in such theoretical universal calculations.

The Pri le Lince

If it had surface gravity equal to that of earth, an asteroid of radius 1.85m would be as heavy as all humans on Earth. That’s
rather heavy, but miniscule on a planetary scale.

But, since the average height of a human is 1.6m, your cranium would experience only about 25% of the gravity on your feet.
Enough to make you feel… lightheaded.

But ignoring that, what about food? An area of 43m2 isn’t enough to grow enough crops on. If you stacked the whole area with
refrigerators, and filled them to the brim with Chickens, then, provided you ate only 2000 calories per day, you’d survive for 4800
days, or about 13 years.

India has about 0.5 Cpp (Chickens per person)1. Since this popula on is roughly constant, we can say that there are 23.5 million
Chickens born every day in India. This has no rela on with then topic, but I just wanted to include it.

Remember that eternal day quote right at the start?

Assuming that the bird removes 1 billion2 molecules of rock every me it comes to visit, and that all rock in the world is actually
disguised CaCO3 , we can say that

grams
{ 13 π{1000 miles}3 (Volume of Mountain)} × { × {6.023 × 1023 objects }}
2.71 cubic centimetres (Density of CaCO3 )
0.1 kilogrammes
mole (Molar Mass of CaCO3 ) mole

{109 1000
objects
years
}

equals

7.106 × 1032 years

It’s neat how the units cancel each other out. 3

And, if you were si ng on the asteroid with me, I could keep looking at you for an Eternal Millennium.

1. This is a real unit and can be found here.

2. The number of footnotes in this chapter is less than usual.

3. Unit Cancella on is weird.
