Thrust Block Design for 90° Bend

This document provides steps to design a thrust block for a 300mm diameter pipe with a working pressure of 11.8 bar. It calculates the maximum design force of 2867.4 based on various pressure values. It then uses soil properties of firm clay with undrained shear strength of 75 kPa to calculate the ultimate resistance of 687.65 kN which exceeds the design force, making the thrust block design satisfactory. Key dimensions of the block are also provided.

DESIGN OF THRUST BLOCK (90⁰)

(300 MM DIA PIPE)

(As Per CIRIA Publication No. 128 )
Step-1 Design Data
1. Working Pressure = 11.8
2. Hydrotest Pressure (1.5 times working pressure) = 17.7
3. Working Pressure + 5bar = 16.8
4. Surge Pressure = 16.874
5. Working Pressure + Surge Pressure = 28.674
Maximum of above = 28.674
= 2867.4
5. Deviation Angle = 90
6. Type of Soil = Firm clay

7. Size of Pipe = 0.3

Hence, Design force Fd = 2pA sin ø

Step-2 2
202.7108

From the information given in Table 8 the soils are described as firm clay and, from Table 2
Step-3 the conditions are good ground.

Step-4 The direction of the design force is horizontal.

From the information given in Table 8 the soil is undrained and the appropriate design
Step-5
parameters are,
s, = 75
y = 20

From Table 5, for firm clay take a value for the thrust
Step-6 reduction factor Tr = 4

Step-7 Consider Length of thrust block, L1 = 1.50

L2 = 0.75
Breadth = 1.75
Height = 2.40
Then face area Af = 3.6
and Base area Ab = 1.96875
the ultimate resistance from section 2.8 is
Ru = 2SuAf + SuAb
= 687.65625
Step-8 From the above Fd = 202.7108

and Ru = 171.9140625
Tr
Hence the design is satisfactory.
