Beam Deflection Experiment Guide

The document presents the theory of beam deflection under a point load. It provides the formulas to calculate the bending moment, shear force, and deflection of a beam with a point load applied at the midspan. It then describes an experiment to measure the deflection of beams with different spans when incremental point loads are applied and records the experimental and theoretical deflections to calculate the percentage difference.

APPARATUS

4.1 Specimen beam (your group may choose one of the following material : Aluminiun,
Brass or Steel)

4.2 Digital Dial Test Indicator

4.3 Hanger and Masses

PROCEDURE

 Positioned the moveable knife-edge supports so that they are 400mm apart
 Place the steel beam at the support
 Place the hanger and the digital dial test indicator at the mid span. Zeroed the digital
reading
 Apply an in incremental load record the deflection for each increment in the table
 Repeat using span of 300mm and 500mm
