Fall Protector

This document provides information about skylight fall protection products called Skylight Protectors (SP). It discusses how SP components like steel tubes, welded mesh, and fittings assemble to form frames that cover skylights. The SP has benefits like portability, durability, and preventing falls while allowing light through. Regulations require fall protection around openings like skylights to prevent injuries from falls. The SP is designed and tested to meet OSHA standards for guarding skylights.

3 INTRODUCTION

 Skylights and roof lights an under-the-radar fall hazard.

 When skylights aren’t protected the consequences can

be tragic. There have even been real life cases of
experienced workers falling through skylights – all it takes
is a few seconds and tragedy can strike.

 Appropriate skylight protectors are an essential for any

workplace’s roof safety and fall hazard system. This is
where a height safety solution comes into play.

 Skylight protectors can be as simple as a mesh cover, or

slightly more complex, like a roof walkway crossover
system for maintenance workers. They should be easy to
see, strong and able to withstand weather effects for
many years, but also designed in a way that they don’t
alter the light that a skylight lets in.

 Easily visible and clear signs also provide an important

alert that there’s a potential danger people should be
aware of.

4 WHY SHYLIGHT PROTECTORS ?

 OSHA accident facts state that 33% of all construction work-

related deaths are the result of falls from elevations.

Don’t let this happen

…this fall was fatal

 There is main solutions when it comes to skylight fall
protection are Skylight Protector, which provide fall
protection by covering the skylight with a wire mesh
framework. The wire mesh will let light through, but is made
to absorb the weight of a falling person. Skylight screens
come in several styles and can protect most of the skylight
types that are currently being used.

Protect Your Skylights. Protect Your People.

OVERVIEW
5

 Skylight Protector has been designed specifically for

metal profile roofs where inline roof level sky lights are
particularly prevalent. The mesh panel top sits onto a
metal frame made from fittings and Size 33.20mm outer
diameter) tube.

 Skylight Protector is designed to be assembled in-situ so

is delivered in component form, thus making it easier to
get up to roof level especially if the parts have to be
carried up through a building.

 Skylight Protector is raised above the skylight which is

mounted on small legs (see image to left) to give a
greater distance between the mesh panel and the roof
light. In the event of a fall this would help ensure the
roof light is not damaged when the skylight protector
absorbs the impact.

Skylight Fall Protection

GENERAL

 Skylight Protector requires physical fixing to the buildings

structure.

 The complete system’s design, manufacture, testing

and installation have been externally assessed and
tested to OSHA Standards.

MATERIALS

 Steel tubing to IS 1239 Part 1-2004.

33.20 mm diameter tube x 2.6 mm wall thickness.

 All steel components galvanised to IS 2629 (1985).

 All fixings are hot dipped galvanised to IS 2629 (1985).

 All cast clamps all grub screws are carbon steel

 GI protection applied to ensure minimal maintenance.

TESTING

OSHA CFR 1910.23(a)(4)

 Every skylight floor opening and hole shall be guarded
by a standard skylight screen or a fixed standard railing
on all exposed sides.

OSHA CFR 1910.23(e)(8)

 Skylight screens shall be of such construction and
mounting that they are capable of withstanding a
load of at least 200 pounds applied perpendicularly at
any one area on the screen. They shall also be of such
construction and mounting that under ordinary loads
or impacts, they will not deflect downward sufficiently
to break the glass below them. The construction shall
be of grillwork with openings not more than 4 inches
long or of slat work with openings not more than 2
inches wide with length unrestricted.

REGULATIONS
8

 A fall through an unguarded skylight usually results in death or

serious injury. This is why the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) requires that employers provide fall
protection as stated in the regulations listed below. FLS Skylight
Screens exceed the OSHA requirement for weight bearing of 200
pounds to any one area of the screen. 1910.28(b)(3)(i).

 Each employee is protected from falling through any hole

(including skylights) that is 4 feet (1.2 m) or more above a lower
level by one or more of the following:
1910.28(b)(3)(i)(A)

Personal fall arrest systems.

 OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1926.501 Duty to Have Fall Protection

 (a) (2) The employer shall determine if the walking/working

surfaces on which the employees are to work have the strength
and structural integrity to support employees safely. Employees
shall be allowed to work on those surfaces only when the surfaces
have the requisite strength and structural integrity.

 (b) (4) Holes (i) Each employee on walking/working surface shall

be protected from falling through holes (including skylights) more
than 6 feet above lower levels by personal fall arrest systems,
covers, or guardrail systems erected around such holes. (ii) Each
employee on walking/working surface shall be protected from
tripping or stepping in the holes (including skylights) by covers.

SP RECERTIFICATION
20
 Periodic inspections by a competent person are
recommended by the manufacturer. The frequency will
depend upon the environment, location and usage but
should be at least every 12 months.
 Visually inspect the complete installed product in relation to
the general client’s needs. Establish if any modifications
and/or additional products are required to reflect any
refurbishment requirements or additional plant & equipment
which have been installed and require material access.
 Check installation configuration is complete as per the
original installation drawing/plan.
 Ensure the product has not been modified or tampered with
by unauthorised persons.
 Check the functionality of the product.
 Check all fixings are in place and sufficiently torqued.
 Check the general height and level of the product.
 Any galvanised components showing signs of corrosion
should be wire brushed thoroughly and galvanised
spray/paint applied as appropriate. If rusted significantly,
take digital photographs and include these in the inspection
report.
 Inspect powder coated product surfaces and note any
imperfections or general degradation.
 Check fixings to structures are sufficiently torqued.
 Check system plaque position & mark up to reflect date of
the next required inspection. Establish if additional plaques
are required due to any refurbishment works.
