The * is used in repeating—'repeat from *'—means to repeat everything that follows the last *.

Chain = ch; slip-stitch = sl st; single crochet = sc; treble crochet =tr.

This pattern contains directions for a crocheted butterfly chair set. The wings of the butterfly and the arm rest
are worked in the pineapple design. Use No. 30 Mercerized Crochet Cotton.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS: 2 (400 yard) balls of No. 30 Mercerized Crochet Cotton and a No. 10 steel
crochet hook.

CHAIR BACK (11-1/2 X 16 INCHES)-BODY-1ST ROW: Ch 5, 4 tr (thread twice around hook for a tr) in
the 5th st from hook.
2ND ROW: Ch 4, turn, 2 tr in the first tr of last row, 1 tr in each of the remaining tr, 3 tr in top 'St of turning
chain below.
Repeat the last row 3 times.
6TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first tr, 1 tr in each of the next 19 tr, 1 tr in top st of turning chain below.
Repeat last row 6 times.
13TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first tr, work a 2 joined tr over next 2 tr as follows: work (thread twice around
hook, draw up a loop in next tr, thread over and through 2 loops, over and through 2 loops)
twice, thread over, draw through all 3 loops on hook (this completes the 2 joined tr), 1 tr in each of the next 16
tr, a 2 joined tr over next tr and the top st of turning chain.
14TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first st, a 2 joined tr over next 2 tr, 1 tr in all but the end (2 joined) tr st, a 2
joined tr over next st and the top st of turning chain.
Repeat the last row 3 times.
18TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first st, work an 8 joined tr over next 8 sts as follows: work (thread twice around
hook, draw up a loop in next st, thread over and through 2 loops, over and through 2 loops) 8 times, thread over,
draw through all 9 loops on hook (this completes the 8 joined tr st), skip next st, 1 tr in top st of turning chain.
19TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first tr, 8 tr in next st, 1 tr in top st of turning chain.
20TH ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first st, 1 tr in each of next 8 tr, 1 tr in top st of chain.
21ST ROW: Ch 4, turn, skip first st, an 8 joined tr over next 8 sts, 1 tr in top st of turning chain.

EDGING: Ch 1, working down along end st of rows work 4 sc over end st of each of the 21 rows, 1 sc in first
st of foundation chain, working up along opposite end st of rows work 4 sc over end st of each of the 21 rows.
FEELERS: Ch 47, 4 sc in the 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the remaining 45 sts of chain, 1 sc in each of
next 2 sts of last row, ch 50, draw up a loop in the 2nd st from hook, draw up a loop in each of the next 3 sts,
thread over, draw through all 5 loops on hook, 1 sc in each of the remaining 45 sts of chain, a sl st in the first sc
of edging; break off.

LEFT WINGS--1ST ROW: Ch 11, 2 tr (thread twice around hook for a tr) in the 5th st from hook, ch 2, 3 tr in
the same st as last tr (this forms a shell), * skip next 2 sts, work a shell of (3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) in next st; repeat
from * once.
2ND ROW: Ch 1, turn, a sl st in each of the first 3 tr of last row, a sl st in next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, 2 tr in the
same chain loop as last sl st, work (ch 2, 3 tr in same chain loop as last tr) twice, * skip next 6 tr, work (3 tr, ch
2, 3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) all in next chain loop; repeat from * once.
3RD ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, (2 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) in same chain loop as last
sl st (this completes the first shell),-skip next 3 tr, a shell in next (ch 2) loop, * ch 7, skip next 6 tr, a shell in
each of the next 2 (ch 2) loops; repeat from * once.
4TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, (always working shells in
the chain loop of shells below) work a shell in next shell, ch 9, skip next chain loop, a shell in next shell, skip
next 2 tr, a shell in next tr, a shell in next shell, ch 9, skip next chain loop, a shell in each of the end 2 shells.
5TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, a shell in next shell, ch 5,
3 tr in center st of next chain loop, ch 5, a shell in next shell, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) all in next shell, a

LOWER WING-1ST SHORT ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell,

next chain loop, a shell in each of the next 2 shells; do not work over the remaining sts.

shell, ch 6, skip next chain loop, 1 sc in next chain loop, (ch 6 and 1 sc) in each of the remaining chain loops of

Repeat last row twice.
5TH SHORT ROW: Same as last row but working (ch 6 and 1 sc in next chain loop instead of each of the

SECOND SCALLOP-1ST SHORT ROW: Join thread with a sl st in next (ch 2) loop on last row of border,
ch 4, complete first shell, ch 6, skip next chain loop, 1 sc in next chain loop, ch 6, 1 sc in next chain loop, ch 6,
skip next chain loop, a shell in next shell; do not work over the remaining sts.
Repeat the 2nd and 3rd short row of first scallop; break off. Work 3 more scallops same as second scallop. This
completes lower wing.

UPPER WING-1ST SHORT ROW: Turn, join thread with a sl st in next shell on 6th (long) row, ch 4,
complete first shell, a shell in next shell, ch 6, skip next chain loop, 2 tr in each of the next 5 tr, ch6, skip next
chain loop, a shell in each of the end 2 shells.
2ND SHORT ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, a shell in next
shell, ch 6, skip next chain loop, 1 sc in next tr, (ch 6 and 1 sc) in each of the next 9 tr, ch 6, skip next chain
loop, a shell in each of the next 2 shells.
3RD SHORT ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, a shell in next
shell, ch 6, skip next chain loop, 1 sc in next chain loop, (ch 6 and 1 sc) in each of the remaining chain loops of
pineapple, ch 6, skip next chain loop, a- shell in each of the end 2 shells. Repeat last row 6 times. Now follow
the directions for. lower wing from the 5th short row to end of the 10th short row.
BORDER-1ST ROW: Do not turn, join thread with a sl st in the ch 4 at the beginning of first shell on first
short row of upper wing; ch 4, complete first shell in the same (ch 4) loop, working along end st of rows work
(ch 6, skip next row, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 6, skip next row, a shell along end st of next row) 3 times,
ch 3, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 3, a shell in top of end st of last row,
ch 3, 4 tr in the sl st between shells of same row, ch 3, a shell along opposite end st of same row, working along
opposite end st of rows work ch 3, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 3, a shell along end st of next row, (ch 6,
skip next row, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 6, skip next row, a shell along end st of next row) 3 times.

Follow directions for 2nd and 3rd row of border for lower wing.

FIRST SCALLOP: Same as first scallop of lower wing. Work 8 more scallops same as second scallop of
lower wing. Using a darning needle and the crochet cotton tack corner of the end shells of the first 3 rows of
border for upper wing to the end shell of the first 3 short rows of lower wing; tack end shells of next 3 rows on
upper wing to the end shells of the first 3 rows of border on lower wing.

EDGING: Join thread with a sl st in the top st of the first ch 4 at beginning of 1st row of border on lower wing,
always placing sts in the corner of the end shells of rows work (ch 6, 1 sc in end shell of next row) 5 times, ch 6,
1 sc in opposite end st of same row, (ch 6, and 1 sc) in end st of each of the next 2 rows, ch 6, 1 sc in corner of
end shell of 1st. row of next scallop; continue to work (ch 6, 1 sc in corner st of next shell) across border of
lower wing, ch 6, 1 sc in the sl st between next 2 shells on upper wing; continue to work (ch 6, 1 sc in corner st
of next shell) across border of upper wing ending with ch 6, 1 sc in corner st of end shell on the 6th long row;
break off. This completes the left wings.
RIGHT WINGS: Follow the directions for the left wings.

BLOCKING: Stretch and pin each section to the correct size and shape on an ironing board (see Illustration of
Chair Back); cover with a damp cloth and press with a warm iron. Remove' when dry.

JOINING OF SECTIONS: Thread a darning needle with the crochet cotton. Arrange the sections of butterfly
as shown on Illustration of Chair Back and overcast together.

ARM REST (6-1/2 X 8-1/2 INCHES)-CENTER SECTION-1ST ROW: Ch 9, 2 tr (thread twice around
hook for a tr) in the 5th st from hook, ch 2, 3 tr in same st as last tr (this forms a shell), skip next 3 sts, work a
shell of (3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) in the end st.
2ND ROW: Ch 1, turn, a sl st in each of the first 3 tr of last row, a sl st in next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr,
ch 2 and 3 tr) all in same chain loop as last sl st, skip next 6 tr, work (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) all in next (ch
2) loop.
3RD ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, (2 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) in same chain loop as last
sl st (this completes first shell), skip next 3 tr,.a shell of (3 tr, ch 2 and 3 tr) in next (ch 2) loop, ch 5, a shell in
each of the next 2 (ch 2) loops.
4TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, (always working shells in
the chain loop of shell below) work a shell in next shell, ch 9, skip next chain loop, a shell in each of the next 2
shells.
5TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, a shell in next shell, ch 5,
3 tr in center st of next (ch 9) loop, ch 5, a shell in each of the end 2 shells.
6TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, slip-stitch over to next (ch 2) loop, ch 4, complete first shell, a shell in next shell, ch 6,

Now follow directions for the lower wing from the 5th short row to end of the 10th short row; break off.

BORDER-1ST ROW: Join thread with a sl st in top of end tr of 2nd row of center section, working along end
st of rows work a shell along end st of next row, (ch 6, skip next row, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 6, skip
next row, a shell along end st of next row) 4 times, ch 3, 4 tr along end st of next row, ch 3, a shell along end st
of next row, ch 3, 4 tr in the sl st between shells below, ch 3, a shell along opposite end st of same row, ch 3, 4 tr
along end st of,next row, ch 3, a shell along end st of next row, work (ch 6, skip next row, 4 tr along end st of
next row, ch 6, skip next row, a shell along end st of next row) 4 times, a sl st in top of end st of next row.

Follow directions for 2nd and 3rd row of border for lower wing.

FIRST SCALLOP: Same as first scallop on lower wing. Work 10 more scallops same as second scallop for
lower wing.
EDGING: Turn, join thread with an sc in the first sl st at beginning of 1st row of border, always placing sts in
corner of end shells of rows work (ch 6, 1 sc in next shell) 5 times, ch 6, 1 sc in opposite end st of same row, (ch
6, 1 sc in next shell) twice, ch 6, 1 sc in corner st of end shell of first shell of next scallop; continue to work (ch
6, 1 sc in next shell) all around border ending with ch 6, 1 sc in the end sl st of first row of border, ch 6, 1 sc
along end st of 1st row of center section, ch 6, 1 sc along opposite end st of same 1st row, ch 6, a sl st in first sc
at the beginning of round; break off. This completes the arm rest. Make a duplicate arm rest.

BLOCKING: Stretch and pin each arm rest to the correct size and shape on an ironing board; cover with a
damp cloth and press with a warm iron. Remove when dry.
