Shisha (hookah) have been used to smoke tobacco by the indigenous
people of Africa and Asia for at least four centuries. the Shisha was
invented in India by a physician during the reign of emperor Akbar
(who ruled from 1556 to 1605) as a purportedly less harmful method of
tobacco use. the physician hakim Abdul Fath suggested that tobacco
“smoke should be first passed through a small receptacle of water so
that it would be rendered harmless”. following popularity among no-
blemen, this new device for smoking soon became a status symbol for
the Indian aristocracy and gentry, as they believed unsubstantially
that the practice was relatively safe.
