II. RATIONALE
One of the visions of Bicol University College of Education is to produce
change agents for social transformation and development as part of
becoming a world class university. Extension service to a community is one of
the ways to contribute in reaching the vision and students play a vital role in it.
However, due to hindrances and constraints, there are limited activities
approved that would suffice the need of the community especially in the field
of education.
Science as a subject has been widely taught to elementary students to
prepare them in secondary or even in tertiary level. However, students seem
to dislike this subject that is why they tend not to participate in class and not
able appreciate the beauty of science. This habit is continued until they pursue
higher level of learning and this perception hinders them from learning.

Secondary teachers would encounter difficulties in teaching them because
their basic foundation of learning science is not that strong.
In line with this, the BSED1-Science a will be conducting this year’s
Science Caravan with the theme, “I am A Child, Science Enthusiast at Heart”
to help elementary students appreciate wonders of science in its different
fields namely, biology, chemistry, physics and earth and environmental
science. This will bring back the fire inside the students of liking the subject and
its content. Moreover, this activity will enhance the skill of the proponents in
teaching and this will also serve as their practice towards becoming teachers.
Teachers who would build the nation and train future professionals. It will
provide them the avenue to experience real scenarios of their roles by letting
them apply the knowledge and skills needed in order for each one of them to
function effectively and efficiently. This activity also aims to promote the value
of team success. More importantly, this will also give opportunity to unite the
students of BSED1-ScienceA and be able to give an extension service to the
community of chosen elementary students.
III. OBJECTIVES
The activity aims to achieve the following objectives:
encourage elementary students to love science through series of
engaging activities appropriate in their level
acquire additional knowledge/ learning in the fields of biology,
chemistry, physics and earth and environmental science by
presenting DIY (do-it-yourself) models.
let the students make their own commitments about changing
negative perceptions in science
Create a bond with student as part of pre-service teaching
