Pile Load Test Methodology

This document provides the methodology for piling and pile load testing for the Samakhiali Gandhidham Road Project. It outlines the necessary manpower, equipment, work procedures, and safety measures for installing piles through boring and pouring concrete via tremie pipes, then load testing piles to ensure adequate bearing capacity. Key steps include installing temporary casings, boring holes, inserting steel cages, pouring concrete through tremie pipes, trimming pile heads, and applying increasing loads to piles through hydraulic jacks to measure settlement over time.

METHODOLOGY FOR PILING & PILE LOAD TEST

MANPOWER REQUIRED:
1. Site Engineer
2. Site Supervisor
3. Operators
4. Workmen

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

Truck mounted mechanical / Hydraulic winch, Trailer, Truck, Tremie, Welding set,
Chisel & Bailer, 2 m height built up section on primary beam, Hydraulic Jacks &
Pumps, ISMB members, Datum Bar, Pressure Gauges, Excavator / JCB / Loader,
Dumper / Tractor, Hydra / Crane, Water Tanker, Transit Mixer, Chute, Needle
vibrator, Concrete Batching Plant.

WORK PROCEDURE:
1. The site shall be cleared of existing structures, trees, heap of earth
etc. at the approximate location of pile.
2. Depending on depth of excavation for pile cap and loose/unstable sub-soil
conditions, suitable depth shall be excavated as per the site condition for
each pile group in order to create a working platform for erection of piling
equipment and installation / routine load testing of piles. Suitable shoring /
strutting, if required, shall be provided on the sides to avoid any collapse of
sides.
3. After setting of the pile location by surveyor, a temporary casing shall be
installed prior to the excavation to support the upper layer of weak soil. The
length of temporary casing shall be decided during installation of initial test
pile and generally be the same at least in a particular group. Casing
installation shall be carried out with the help of hammer attached to the
tripod and winch.
4. After installation of temporary casing and checking of its location and
verticality the boring with conventional rig shall be started.

5. The steel cage, pre-assembled as needed and complete with the
appropriate spacers and stiffeners will be lowered into the hole.
6. Prior to concrete pouring operation, 150 mm internal diameter tremie pipes
of full length, assembled together from sections of 1.20 – 1.50 meter each,
shall be lowered down to the bottom of the pipe and then lifted up by 200 to
300 mm. The top of tremie pipe shall be fitted with a feeding hopper to
receive concrete. It shall be ensured that all the joints between the tremie
segments as well as that between the funnel and tremie are watertight.
7. After the flushing is completed, approved concrete shall be poured through
tremie.
8. Trimming of pile head shall be completed within 4 to 7 days of casting.
9. The load test shall be carried out after 28 days from the date of casting of
pile.
10. Load shall be provided by a Hydraulic Jack or a battery of Hydraulic Jacks,
inserted between test pile and ISMB members, dead weights.
11. Load shall be applied in series of approx. 20% i.e. 1/5th of assumed safe
load with the help of the calibrated pressure gauge, up to maximum load of
1.5 times of safe load for routine test.
12. In each stage of loading each increment shall be maintained till the rate of
settlement of pile top is either 0.10mm in first 30 minutes or 0.20mm in first 1
hour or till 2 hours, whichever occurs first.
13. Settlement reading shall be taken before and after the application of each
new load increment and at every 15 minutes until the application of next load
increment.
14. Settlement shall be measured by minimum two or more dial gauges of 0.01
mm sensitivity for single pile and fixed on non-movable support with
magnetic bases and tips resting on glass plates, fixed on base plate, placed
on top of pile, equi-spaced around the pile top. Support of datum bar is 3D or
1.5m away from test pile.
15. Unloading may be carried out, if possible. A period of 15 minutes may be
allowed to elapse between the two successive stages of load decrement.
16. In case of any reference, please follow the job procedure or IS: 2911 Part-IV.
17. The Loading shall be increased up to 2 times of the safe load for the total
settlement of 120mm for a pile of 1200mm dia.

18. The Loading shall be increased up to 1.5 times of the safe load for the total
settlement of 12mm.

Safety Measures:

1. All safety precautionary measures shall be taken as stated below:

2. Signboards shall be placed along the right hand side on increasing chainage
at every 500 meters i.e. “KEEP RIGHT WORK IN PROGRESS”, GO SLOW
WORK IN PROGRESS”.
3. Moveable signboards shall be place at area where heavy machineries and
survey works being carried out. The movement of machines and lorries at
these areas shall be controlled by flagman’s Signboards such as “CAUTION
MAN AT WORK GO SLOW”, “CAUTION GO SLOW WORK IN
PROGRESS”.
4. The area shall be restricted from public entrance.
5. All truck shall be provided with reverse horns.
6. Only experienced and licensed operators / drivers shall be engaged for
excavation and hauling.
7. Flagmen shall be provided at all exit points of the trucks /tippers near the job
to be done.
8. If night work is to be carried out the area shall be sufficiently provided with
lighting.
9. The pit, which exceeds 1200mm in depth, shall be barricaded.
10. Proper PPEs shall be used the workers and staff involved in the work.
11. Safety as per IRC-SP-55-2001 may be taken up in location warranting need.
