CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Remanufacturing is needed to increase the profit of the company .it is also needed to
decrease the material required for manufacturing the product. Remanufacturing is the
rebuilding of a product to specifications of the original manufactured product using a
combination of reused, repaired and new parts. It requires the repair or replacement of worn
out or obsolete components and modules. Remanufacturing help our business to cut costs.
By considering how our products are designed and their environmental impacts at all stages
of their life cycle, we can keep the cost of raw materials, energy and water to a minimum.
We also save money by reducing the amount of waste you have to dispose of.
Remanufacturing has a better safety record than the recycling industry, encourages problem-
solving skills, is more rewarding than production line jobs and uses traditional industry
skills.
Remanufactured parts and components provide same-as-new performance and reliability at
fraction-of-new costs—while reducing the impact on the environment. And over the counter
availability gives customers more options at repair and overhaul time. The results are
maximum productivity and lower costs. Remanufacturing reduces waste and minimizes the
need for raw material to produce new parts. Through remanufacturing, we can make one of
the greatest contributions to sustainable development—keeping nonrenewable resources in
circulation for multiple lifetimes. Remanufacturing is useful for business purpose because it
reduces the cost associated with the production of the product and also reduces the
machining to be done on the product. It also increases the profit associated with the product.
1.2 Motivation
While changing the oil the whole assembly of engine oil filter is thrown away. According to
the statistics up to APRIL 2016 there were 20.47 million vehicles in India Out of this there
are 2.79 millions of passenger vehicles and 0.69 million of commercial vehicles. The oil in
passenger vehicles is changed after every 3 to 4 months and the oil in commercial vehicles
is changed after 6 to 7 months.
While changing the oil the whole engine oil filter is replaced by the new engine oil
filter. Thus there is lots of wastage of non-renewable resources because the casing which is
not damaged at all is also thrown away. So to prevent the wastage of natural resources and
the cost associated with replacing the whole filter we are motivated to perform this project.

1.3 Need of the Project
1 While changing the oil the whole assembly of engine oil filter is thrown.
2 According to the statistics there are 20.47 million vehicles in india.
3 Out of this there are 2.79 millions of passenger vehicles and 0.69 millions of commercial
vehicles.
4 The oil in passenger vehicles is changed after every 1 to 2 months and the oil in commercial
vehicles is changed after 5 to 6 months.
5 While changing the oil the whole engine oil filter is replaced by the new engine oil filter.
6 Thus there is lots of wastage of non renewable resources because the casing which is not
damaged at all is also thrown away.
7 So to prevent the wastage of natural resources and the cost associated with replacing the
whole filter we are motivated to perform this project.
8 So the need of this project is to make the oil changing process convenient and to reduce the
cost associated with the changing of the whole oil filter.

1.4 LIMITATIONS
Work will be done on redevelopment or remanufacturing of the engine oil filter.
The remanufactured engine oil filter can be used upto a ceratin load only and can get loss
the material quality after certain amount of time.
The product can be remanufactured upto a certain life period only as its strength will decrease
as it is frequently used.
