1. Aim of this report
• To detail my main duties as a Manufacturing Engineer, having been in the various job positions as
Junior Project Leader and Proposal Engineer within the organisations to which I have been based.
• To identify my developing experience and training within this organisation.
• To report upon my continuing professional development
2. Career Summary
While at university, the approach used in my final year project on the design, fabrication and testing of a Pin-
On-Disc Wear Testing Rig figured in a paper session 6D5 in the International Conference on Engineering
Education ICEE 2001 Oslo, Norway. Prior to that, during my degree course I attended training sessions at
Shell Gas Ltd and Margarine Industries Ltd and designed for each company a preventive maintenance
system; one for Domestic & Industrial LPG installations and the second one for all the equipments in the
factory.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering honours degree in Manufacturing Engineering from the
University of Mauritius in July 2001.
In August 2001, I joined Forges Tardieu Ltd and since now, I am still working in the same company. I was
initially employed as an Assistant Project Leader in the design and development unit and after 2 years I was
promoted to Junior Project Leader. I worked under the supervision of the design & development manager. At
the time when the company was setting up it’s quality management system, I spent one month in the quality
department helping in the preparation of some procedures. I was also posted one year on site as design
engineer. In January 2008, I wanted to explore something new and went to the proposal unit as a Proposal
Engineer. During my stay at Forges Tardieu Ltd, I was exposed to a wide range of equipments but more
within the sugar and petroleum industry regarding equipments such as belt conveyor, apron type conveyor,
scraper conveyor, screw conveyor, bucket elevator, feeder table, carding drums, levelling drums, indexer,
shredders, knives, diffuser, mills, filters, juice heaters, plate type heat exchanger, clarifiers, flash tanks,
evaporators, vacuum pan, continuous vacuum pan, condensers, horizontal & vertical crystallisers, fins type
reheater, centrifugals, dryers, storage tanks, horizontal & vertical tanks, pumps, piping, building, structures,
staging, among others.

Figure 3.4 Product realization structure
The Product Realization process receives project information from the Proposals process. The Design
and Development Unit converts these into design information and transmits them to the Procurement,
Manufacturing & Construction and Quality Unit. Procurement unit uses this information to provide all
the materials required for the manufacturing of the product. Manufacturing & Construction unit uses
the material provided and the design information to manufacture the product. Quality Control ensures

that the material provided and the manufactured product(s) conforms to the requirements of the
customer.
3.7.1 Design and Development Unit
The objective of the Design and Development Unit is to carry out all design studies and drafting works.
Project studies are often done so as to make a preliminary study of the problem. This usually involves
design and drafting. The site under consideration as well as its vicinity has to be drawn. From there on,
the solution must be derived eliminating all possible constraints. Design should deal with the
technology to be adopted, the means of producing the equipment required, sizing of all components,
method of transportation and erection and so forth. A project leader from the design unit is assigned to
each project and is responsible for the management of all technical aspects of the project to its
completion.
The “Design and Justification” Method mostly used at Forges Tardieu Ltd is a Goal Directed and
Simultaneous approach. The objectives/goals of the design are specified in the design brief but the
designer can modify these goals within the design process to direct the analysis towards the specified
goals. The economic and performance aspects of the design are considered concurrently at each point
of the trade-off. In this manner the economic justification is done for each alternative/change during the
design process itself

3.7.3 Site Design Engineer
I was posted on site at Societe Usiniere du Sud, a local sugar industry where there was a capacity
expansion from 150 to 350 TCH. The factory had major changes and modifications to the cane
preparation and complete process. The sugar estate is the first in Mauritius to install the chain type
Fives Cail cane diffuser, the syrup treatment and the sulfitation system which are based on a Brazilian
model. All strategies were employed to reduce cost including modification of existing equipments,
refurbishment, use and modification of equipments from other sugar industries. Before completion of
the project, Forges Tardieu Ltd faced a big problem where all the unit managers resigned. Hence during
3 months before handing over of the project, I have had to stand alone. I reported principally to the
managing director and the new project manager.

6. Conclusion
Forges Tardieu Ltd is quite unique in the sense that it is probably the only company on the
island capable of doing complete project design, fabrication, erection and having a wide
experience and history in the sugar industry field. During my stay at Forges Tardieu Ltd, I have
gained lot of knowledge, experience and skills. I have also worked on projects of different type
and complexity, making hundreds of drawings, solving problems of all type, making proposals
for small, big and turnkey projects, working in groups and standalone and interacting with
stakeholders. I have also made personal development by acquiring communication skills and
building relationship network. Furthermore as an employee, I have been a value added person
and a good colleague. I have read, understood and will abide by the IMechE Code of Conduct
and willing to be more active, involved and better contribute to IMechE. Becoming a chartered
engineer will certainly be a great motivation to make major improvements and better contribute
to people, engineering, the company and the society at large.
