National Reading Month 2018 Narrative

The BERNABE Q. BIAGTAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL celebrates National Reading

Month in November, for November 27 of each year has been declared as “Araw ng Pagbasa”
(National Reading Day) through Republic Act 10556. This is in honor of the father of former
President Benigno Aquino III, the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., whose birth date is November
27, 1932.The event declared by the Department of Education (DepEd) with this year’s theme
“Pagbasa: Susi sa Magandang Kinabukasan.”

National Reading Month Celebration aimed to achieve its goals which are to deepen the
appreciation for books, exhibit the writing and visual art skills, expand students’ vocabulary,
encourage accurate word usage, develop skill in oral language and all expressive mechanisms
(voice and bodily expressions), promote teacher, students, and community relations and
camaraderie, and gear up the pupils with values and meaningful life lessons.

The celebration became meaningful because of some suggested activities by DepEd like
Mystery Reader, Parade of Character, Film Viewing, Book Fair, Peer Reading and Big-Book-
Making were performed by the pupils. Everyone involved and enjoyed themselves in the different
activities especially on the parade of characters.
During kick-off program our School Principal Mrs. Mary Ann P. Macaraeg gave insights
on the importance of reading. She inculcates the value of being a reader on day-to-day activities.
Like, to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle, filling out applications without help,
reading road or warning signs. That reading is essential for a child’s success. ‘Mystery Readers’
in the persons of Mrs. Celerina Jilla C. Celis, who was full of enthusiasm, told story among the
learners. She then gave rewards to those who were able to answer her questions at the end of the
story. Another one, is Mrs. Jean P. Del Campo who did a Make-believe Story, wherein she made
used of the learners who wore costume to be the characters and play their role on the stage.
Indeed, the Film Viewing, Book Fair, Peer Reading and Big-Book-Making were also done
successfully. Those were made into reality through the passion and determination of the BQBES
Teaching Force led by our School Principal, Mrs. Mary Ann P. Macaraeg.
