FORENSIC CHEMISTRY DIVISION
Brief Description
The Forensic Chemistry Division is part of the Forensic Investigation Service
of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
General Functions
1. Receives, collects and analyzes physical and biological specimens to
determine the presence of drugs, human DNA, alcohols, poisons,
insecticides, pesticides, gunshot residues, metals and metallic fragments,
paints, soils, flammable substances, explosives and explosive residues, and
other substances.
2. Conducts blood grouping, blood and blood stain analysis, hair and fiber
analysis, seminal stain analysis, UV light examinations, glass fracture
analysis, serial number restoration, paraffin examinations, moulage, tool
impressions, analysis in products of unfair competition, substance
identification, ink and document examination, trace evidence analysis,
approximate distance of firing of firearms, distance of firing on clothing and
other forensic examinations.
3. Performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory analysis.
4. Utilizes precision instruments in the conduct of laboratory analyses.
5. Aids in the investigation of cases handled by the NBI by providing technical
assistance and expertise in the field of science and forensics.
6. Renders technical assistance and expertise to investigative, judicial and
administrative bodies.

1. Typhoon Yolanda DNA Collection (November 2013 up to Present)
Tacloban On-Site Collection Post-Mortem Statistics = 2273 Cases
Tacloban On-Site Collection Ante-Mortem Statistics = 912 Cases
FCD-DNA Manila Collection Ante-Mortem Statistics = 90 Cases
2. Chemistry Case
C-14-04 Drinks purchased from a fast food chain that gave Positive
Results for the presence of Clozapine, an antipsychotic drug
used in the treatment of Schizoprenia.
C-14-10 Examination of vehicle used in the ambush-killing of one
Noel Archival that yielded Positive for the presence of
metallic particles and gunpowder nitrates and the discovery
of an empty shell found at the bottom of the rear right side
seat of the car which also yielded for the presence of metallic
particles and gunpowder nitrates.
3. Dangerous Drugs Case
DD-14-09 Examination of several seized drugs and drug paraphernalia
allegedly recovered from Fil-Canadians Barry Espadilla, et. al. that yielded
Positive for the presence of Methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA),
Methamphetamine Hydrochloride (shabu), and Cocaine which are all
dangerous drugs under R.A. 9165. Other substances that were identified
include Levamisole, Phenacetin, Benzocaine, Procainamide and Lidocaine all
used as Cocaine adulterants.
DD-14-90 200 transparent capsules containing powdered substance
which tested Positive for the presence of Ethylone and Methylone, both
synthetic cathinones. It is the 1st identified and documented synthetic
cathinone case in the Philippines. Synthetic cathinones (“bath salts”) are
already banned in Europe, USA, Canada, Singapore and some other countries
but are still not regulated in Philippines.

Dangerous Drugs Unit – Front Liner Service (No Lunch Break)
o This Front Liner Unit of the Division that caters to walk-in applicants
for the examination of dangerous drugs in urine (for purposes
including employment, rehabilitation and personal). It receives,
processes and releases results to the requesting party within 1-hour or
less for a fee of two hundred pesos (P200.00)
o It has exceeded last year’s statistics by 321cases.
Statistics: End of September 2014 = 2222 cases
End of September 2013 = 1901 cases
o To date (October 13, 2014) the total number of cases received and
processed by this Unit is 2355. It has already exceeded by 151 cases
the December 2013 statistics of 2204 cases.
