Part Five, Delimitation of the Study, gives the brief and concise scope or
boundaries of the study.
BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned
and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion
active users, more than half of them using Facebook on a mobile device. Users must
register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other
users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they
update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups, organized
by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into
lists such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends". Facebook was founded by Mark
Zuckerberg with his college roommates’ and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo
Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's
membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded
to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually
added support for students at 5 various other universities before opening to high school
students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. In May 2005, Accel partners
invested $12.7 million in Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1 million of his own money to

the pot. According to a May 2011 Consumer Reports survey, there are 7.5 million children
under 13 with accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site's terms of service.
Facebook is beneficial to one's social life because they can continuously stay in contact
with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial
tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some
argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways.
With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay
in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as
long as there is access to the Internet. It can also unite people with common interests
and/or beliefs through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite lost family
members and friends because of the widespread reach of its network. Facebook also
continues to prompt debate about users’ behaviors. The effects of online activities on
themselves and their interactions with others have been discussed extensively. In
particular, students0 are a main class of Facebook users who spend long hours on the
social network, which has worried parents and educational authorities about their
academic performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on Facebook,
as a leisure activity, does not hinder their academic efforts, though some evidence
suggests that their grades decline after they join Facebook.( Anjenette Columnas2014)

Review of Related Literature
This chapter 2 is consisting of four parts namely; (1) Facebook Addiction (2)
History of facebook addiction, (3) the effect of facebook Addiction (4) Advantage and
Disadvantage of facebook.
Facebook Addiction
“Facebook addiction” is a term coined by researchers that is applied to individuals
who engage in excessive, compulsive Facebook use for the purposes of mood alteration,
with negative personal outcomes. In other words, a person with Facebook addiction may
subjectively experience a loss of control while continuing to use Facebook excessively
despite its detrimental effects on the individual’s life. However, excessive use may not be
considered addictive unless it is compulsive; for example, one may spend long hours on
Facebook for the purposes of work without being addicted. Because Facebook is currently
the most popular social networking site, and empirical studies of Facebook use outweigh
studies of other social networking sites, the present review focuses on the emerging
problem of Facebook addiction. Facebook allows users to create profiles and form
connections with other users called “friends.” Friends may interact with each other by
messaging and sharing photos, videos, or personal interests while traversing information
about the activities of their friends and their friend’s friends. Users can enhance their
profiles with a multitude of apps; for instance, users can play games, gamble, and

generate polls, as well as integrate other social networking sites such as Twitter and
Instagram. Facebook can also be used by professionals to market their services and
connect with their audiences. Users are constantly notified of new online activity by a live
news feed, which could encourage addiction by acting as classically conditioned cues on
a variable interval reinforcement schedule. As Facebook addiction is an emerging focus of
study, current screening instruments have been designed based on measures of other
behavioral addictions . Most of these scales are rooted in the six core components of
addiction.( Dr. Chakraborty2001)
HISTORY OF FACEBOOK
Facebook is a social networking service launched as FaceMash in July 2003, but
later changing to The Facebook on February 4, 2004.[1] It was founded by Mark
Zuckerberg with his college roommate and fellow Harvard University student Eduardo
Saverin. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard
students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and
gradually most universities in the United States and Canada, corporations, and by
September 2006, to everyone with a valid email address along with an age requirement
of being 13 and older.

Mark Zuckerberg, 23, founded Facebook while studying psychology at Harvard
University. A keen computer programmer, Mr Zuckerberg had already developed a
number of social-networking websites for fellow students, including Coursematch, which
allowed users to view people taking their degree, and Facemash, where you could rate
people's attractiveness. In February 2004 Mr Zuckerberg launched "The facebook", as it
was originally known; the name taken from the sheets of paper distributed to freshmen,
profiling students and staff. Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had signed up, and
after one month, over half of the undergraduate population had a profile. The network was
promptly extended to other Boston universities, the Ivy League and eventually all US
universities. It became Facebook.com in August 2005 after the address was purchased
for $200,000. US high schools could sign up from September 2005, then it began to spread
worldwide, reaching UK universities the following month. As of September 2006, the
network was extended beyond educational institutions to anyone with a registered email
address. The site remains free to join, and makes a profit through advertising revenue.
Yahoo and Google are among companies which have expressed interest in a buy-out,
with rumoured figures of around $2bn (£975m) being discussed. Mr Zuckerberg has so
far refused to sell. (Mark Zuckerberg)
The Effect of Facebook Addiction
Facebook is great for communication, networking and planning events. It is a social
media platform that was designed to connect people and clearly it achieves this in a
number of ways. However, Facebook’s utility and popularity often masks its more

psychologically damaging aspects, of which there seems to be three: addiction, social
isolation and depression.A study by Andreassen et al. (2012), published in Psychological
Reports, developed a ‘Facebook Addiction Scale’. In the study, a group of Facebook users
were asked a series of questions and if their answer to at least four of the questions was
‘often’ or ‘very often’, these users were deemed to be addicts. The participant was asked
to answer how often the following have happened during the last year Again, if four out of
six of these questions are answered with ‘often or ‘very often’, then a harmless Facebook
habit is no longer harmless, but an addiction. Indeed, you can remove the word ‘Facebook’
from each of the questions and replace it with anything else which is habit-forming –
gambling, sex, drugs – and the respective answers will also be a good indication of an
addiction. Personally, I could probably answer two or three of the questions with ‘often’,
so I wouldn’t have a Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD), a term which is gaining
popularity, but I might still have a Facebook habit. The fact that I feel a compulsion to
check Facebook constantly and have trouble going one day without it suggests that I
probably do have a Facebook habit. I’m sure it’s the same for millions of other Facebook
users. For a minority, the situation is a lot worse. Some people do not just feel compelled
to use Facebook, but their Facebook use has become so out of control that it interferes
with work, studies, relationships and normal social functioning. This is the point when a
habit turns into an addiction or a pathological disorder. A habit is not without negative
effects as well. Feeling a compulsion to use Facebook, becoming restless without it and
being unable to cut down on how often you use it can stop you from doing more fulfilling
activities. There was a point when I intentionally limited myself to use Facebook once a

day, only to check for messages from friends or for updates on future events. I maintained
it for a while, but it was a conscious effort. Now I’ve found myself getting back into the
habit of scrolling down the News Feed, wasting my time looking into other people’s lives
and gaining nothing positive from it. This time could be better spent. ( Andreassen et al.
2012)
Advantage and Disadvantage of Facebook
Facebook is arguably the most powerful social media and social networking site
out there. You can use Facebook to connect with your family, friends, work colleagues,
and you can even meet new people on Facebook. Most people who know how to use a
computer and internet have a profile on Facebook. Moreover, it’s easy to find like-minded
people by seeing their interests, and you can easily connect with them using wall updates,
private messages, and video chats. Indeed, with a social network powered by over 1 billion
active users, it’s easy to find a date that shares common interests and hobbies. Finding
dates in this way, much of the time you won’t get into incompatibility issues. One should
be careful about fake Facebook profiles, though, as they are usually created by stalkers
or spammers. Facebook is one of the largest sites in the world where we are not only
allowed, but encouraged to connect with everyone. Anyone can take advantage of
Facebook to maintain a good relationship with others who identify with certain tastes or
products. This is very important because as a business, you can sell or promote a
product/service to a highly targeted audience, thus increasing the possibilities of making

money on the internet. Facebook allows the establishment of partnerships between
various projects. Moreover, using a Facebook fan page, you can increase your brand
value and social media presence for your business. If used properly, Facebook can help
you find new leads and clients. Facebook implemented the Facebook video chat feature
in partnership with Skype. Now you can make video calls to your friends using Facebook’s
inbuilt video chat service. You can also use Facebook as a site to host images and videos.
You can set privacy levels for individual albums to control who can see what you share.
Moreover, you can always download your complete collection of Facebook photos and
videos using the Facebook backup account feature.
The real advantage of Facebook is that it’s a real-time social networking site. This
makes it one of the best sources to stay updated with the latest news and information.
Major news usually goes viral on Facebook, and most brands use it to announce important
things regarding their products/services. Bloggers and internet marketers can subscribe
to popular blog fan pages and keep themselves aware of the latest updates. In fact, I have
one profile just to gather news. Facebook’s Timeline gives a completely new look
regarding your personal profile branding. With the Facebook Timeline cover, you are
allowed create a dramatic first impression as the cover pic will quickly tell people what you
are all about. Also, you can make certain updates public, and if done strategically, you can
use it as a portfolio. For example, if you want people to recognize you as a Facebook
business expert (provided you are one), you can set your privacy to Public for your most
commented and liked “Facebook for business tips, articles, and discussions”. This way all

your new profile visitors will see your expertise, and they will be connecting with you
because of your useful and targeted updates. This will also help you get more subscribers
and potential clients. One of the major concerns and disadvantages of Facebook has to
do with Facebook’s privacy. In the past, it has created a lot of buzz due to sudden changes,
but now Facebook has simplified its privacy settings. Another thing to consider has to do
with the availability of really personal information, whether it’s in video, pictures, or text.
All throughout the internet, we should always keep in mind the privacy of our personal
data. After it’s placed online, we lose all control. Even though Facebook has simplified its
privacy settings, many unknowing users still end up publishing private images and status
updates publicly. Also, people usually keep their Facebook friends list visible to the public,
and this helps Facebook stalkers find more information about you. There is no limit to
these profiles. Most of them are created by stalkers or marketers looking to gain more
friends and use it for their marketing purposes. (Lucia2003)

Methodology
Chapter three has five parts: (1) Research design (2) Subject (3) Instrument (4)
Data Collection Procedure and (5) Data analysis procedure.
Research Design
This study used descriptive quantitative research design it involves description of
specific information wanted to obtain.
Descriptive is the most widely-used research design as indicated by the theses,
dissertations and research reports of institutions. Its common means of obtaining
information include the use of the questionnaire, personal interviews with the aid of study
guide or interview schedule, and observation, either participatory or not
This research is all about the effect of facebook addiction on academic
performance. Facebook addiction means spending an excessive amount of time on
Facebook. Addiction is a strong word, and someone can have a problem with Facebook
without having a full-blown addiction. (LIFEWIRE)
The result of the study will help learners to become aware of negative effect of
facebook addiction to academic performance. They will know how to minimize the use of
computers in everyday life.
