The Engineer Persona
Engineering (from Latin ingenium, meaning "cleverness" and ingeniare, meaning "to contrive, devise") is
the application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to invent, design, build,
maintain, and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. The discipline of
engineering is extremely broad, and encompasses a range of more specialized fields of engineering,
each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied science, technology and types of
application. But what is an engineer? What are his/her qualities? What skills must he/she possess? You
will create a persona for who an engineer is by performing this activity.
Activity:
1. Use the same grouping from the previous presentation. Basically, you will be describing the “who” of
an engineer. You may create your output based on your collective experiences or your theoretical idea
of who an engineer is.
2. Develop a persona for an “engineer”. Start by defining his biography. Will the engineer be a male or
female? What is his/her name? Think of a creative name that would reflect the personality or attributes
of the engineer from the name alone. How old is he/she? Is he/she married? How many kids does
he/she have? What is his/her family background? Develop a short contextual description of his youth
and his/her experiences growing up.
3. Create a sketch for the engineer. It must show his physical qualities. Is he/she short or tall? Does
he/she have a sense for fashion trends? Also include his/her challenges, hobbies, likes & dislikes, goals,
motivation, and needs – Social, Physical, Emotional, Communication, & Identity.
4. The steps above only serves as a general guide. You may also include other details not mentioned
here. Samples below describe the persona for a student. You may use the template/examples as can be
seen in the attached pictures as basis.
5. Your output must be placed in 1 whole sheet of cartolina paper. Also make a 5-minute video
presentation showing the steps taken by the group beginning from the brainstorming process up to the
discussion of the final persona developed. Include the documentation of the process you took to come
up with the final output. Presentation will be done on October 2, 2019.
