The Contributions of Greeks and Romans in the Development of Science and Technology

Here are some of the Great Greek Philosophers that helped in the development of science and
technology during the ancient times.

• Thales of Miletus is best known as the first Western philosopher, he actually became famous for
predicting a solar eclipse.
• Socrates emphasized the study of human nature in relation to society. His main contribution to
western philosophy is his method of inquiry that was called after him.
• Empedocles assumed that there were more than one kind of matter and postulated four
elements of the world: earth, air, fire and water.
Hippocrates
 He stated that diseases have natural causes and the body has the power to repair itself.
 Started the science of medicine and known as the greatest physician of antiquity and regarded
as the “father of medicine”
 Responsible for Hippocratic Oath
Aristotle
 Engrossed himself in studying many areas of science like Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology, etc.
 Regarded as the “father of biology”, undertook a large scale classification of plants and animals.
 “scala naturae” or Great Chain of Being is the first theories in biology
Archimedes
 Performs experiments which led him to discover the laws of the lever and the pulley that
resulted in the invention of machines which easily move loads.
 He excelled in Geometry, calculus, hydrostatics and displacement.
