2015 Raw Nationals Meeting Summary

The Raw Committee proposed establishing objective qualifying totals (QTs) for all lifters based on performance data from past Raw Nationals. The QTs would be tied to classification levels representing the top percentiles of performances. This was aimed to raise the level of competition by cutting approximately 30-50% of lifters who have not achieved the required QTs. There was debate about implementing QTs and their potential effects on meet size and competitiveness. The committee proposed applying the new system starting in 2016 but it requires executive approval.

Qualifying Totals (QTs)
• Topic has been debated since the beginning
• Has the tipping point been reached with
1100+ lifters?
• Raw Committee’s proposal in 2014 was
rejected in favor of QTs that had virtually no
effect
QT Proposal From Raw Committee
• Step 1: Develop raw lifter classifications
– Developed with data from USAPL database
between 2013-2015
• Represents all (or most) raw performances in USAPL in
the given time period
– Lifter classification levels tied to various
percentiles
• Example: to achieve the Elite classification, lifter must
achieve a total that 2.5% or fewer lifters in the given
weight class have achieved (in the past 3 years)
Raw Lifter Classifications (kg)

Class 5 (top 90%) 204 241 268 296 325 354 382 413 447
QT Proposal From Raw Committee
• Step 2: Assign QTs
– QTs linked directly to various classification levels
• Example: open lifters need to achieve Class 1 total
– QTs
• Open: Class 1 (top 15%)
• M1 and Jr: Class 2 (top 25%)
• M2 and T3: Class 3 (top 50%)
• M3 and T2: Class 4 (top 75%)
• M4/M4+ and T1: Class 5 (top 90%)
QT Proposal From Raw Committee
• Raw Committee proposes to put these
classifications and QTs into effect in January,
2016 and have them apply for the 2016 Raw
Nationals and beyond
– Due to time constraints, proposal will require
Executive Committee approval to put into place
without NGB approval
QT Proposal: Advantages
• Simple system that can easily be applied to all
• System is objective, data-driven, and fair to all
• System is easy to understand
• Classifications/QTs can be updated every 3
years to reflect changing trends in
performances nationwide
QT Proposal: Effect on Raw Nationals
• Current proposal will significantly cut down
number of lifters at Raw Nationals
• Only higher caliber lifters will be able to
achieve required QTs
QT Proposal: Effect on Raw Nationals
• Based on performances at 2014 Raw
Nationals, these QTs would cut out:
– 36% of the females
• Drops to 27% if 13 women within 5kg make it
– 28% of the males
• Based on QTs reported for 2015 Raw
Nationals*, these QTs would cut out:
– 49% of the females
– 42% of the males
* Note: Reported 2015 QTs do not necessarily represent true capabilities of lifters

percentage of women cut out becomes 27%. † The combined [men and women] percent cut
would also drop from 31% to 28% as a result of the 13 women making it.
