Days

Days have names!

Each day is special! Tom says there are seven different days:

Week

Seven days together make a week. A week can be any period of seven days, as shown here
(click on any day, and a whole week is shown)

For example : Tom said that he was going sailing in one week ... so that means he has to wait
7 days.

This is easy! I know what a Day is, and 7 Days make a Week:

1 Week = 7 Days

Month

Have also heard people talk about Months ... what are they?

Tom says there are 12 different months! Each has a different name, and I should try to
remember them all (wow!) He says a month is about 30 days long, but some months can be
longer or shorter. For example April has 30 days, but May has 31 Days! If there are about 30
days in a month, how may weeks is that? Tom says that 30 days is a little longer than 4
weeks. OK, some months are 30 Days, but not all of them.

7
1 Month = about 30 Days = about 4 Weeks

Months of the year

Year

A Year is 12 Months

And a year is also 365 Days (or 366 Days in a

Leap Year)

1 Year = 12 Months = 365 (or 366) Days

In English, most years are separated into two

numbers. For example:

1750 – seventeen fifty

1826 – eighteen twenty-six

1984 – nineteen eighty-four

2017 – twenty seventeen

The first year of each century is pronounced like this:

1400 – fourteen hundred

1700 – seventeen hundred

2000 – two thousand

We can refer to a decade (a period of ten years) in this way:

1960-1969 – The ‘60s – pronounced ‘the sixties’.

1980-1989 – The ‘80s – pronounced ‘the eighties’.

2000 – 2009 – The 2000s – pronounced ‘the two thousands’.

For example:

– The Beatles were famous in the sixties.

– My parents got married in the seventies.

– Maradona played for Napoli in the eighties.

8
– Where were you living in the nineties?

– The internet became popular worldwide in the two thousands.

As you can see, we use ‘in’ with the years.

Task 1

Read the text carefully and underline name of days you find.

This is May. She’s ten years old. She’s

tall and thin. She has long brown hair. She has
brown eyes. She can sing and dance. She can’t

Every Monday, May reads Chinese

books with her friends. Every Tuesday, she
rides a bike to school. On Wednesday, she
plays music at school. On Thursdays, she sings
English songs with her friends. Every Friday,
she cooks eggs at home.

1,291 tourists evacuated from Gili islets arrive in Bali

BOOKMARK THIS PAGE

More than 1,290 tourists, mostly foreign nationals, who evacuated from three popular islets off the
northwest coast of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno –
have been arriving at Benoa Bay in neighboring Bali from Monday evening through Tuesday
morning.

The Gili islets have reportedly been experiencing an electricity blackout and lack of clean water since
a 7-magnitude earthquake struck Lombok on Sunday evening. Some tourists were injured during the
earthquake and require medical treatment.

Five private vessels and one dispatched by state-owned shipping operator PT Pelni have been
transporting tourists on the islets to Bali and the main island of Lombok.

“Some of them have been transported from the Gilis to Lombok, but they got stuck there. It was a
bit difficult for them to get food or passage *to Bali+, so we decided to transport *them+ here,” Benoa
Port authority chief Dwiyanto said in Bali on Tuesday.

Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) chairman Ketut Ardana said SITA had
provided free transportation to help the evacuees arrive at their next destinations.

“We’ve also offered a 50 percent discount for accommodations for at least one night,” he added.

The Bali Tourism Agency also provided free transportation to different tourist spots, such as Kuta,
Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud. (swd)

A video posted to Facebook shows cars stopped on the roadway while a
policeman shepherds the animal to safety. The koala ambled and hopped casually
along the highway before eventually taking refuge in greenery next to the road, all to
the amusement of motorists. The officer stayed close to the koala until it climbed a
tree to safety.
Koalas look cute but experts say that they should not be picked up because they have
sharp claws.
