Question : A hydrocarbon mixture with the following overall composition is flashed
in a separator at 50 psia and 100°F.
Assuming an ideal condition behaviour, perform flash calculations and find ‘ nv’ i.e.
total number of moles in vapour phase.
COMPONENT Zi Pvi ki
C3 0.2 190 3.8
i-C4 0.1 72.2 1.444
n-C4 0.1 51.6 1.032
i-C5 0.2 20.44 0.4088
n-C5 0.2 15.57 0.3114
C6 0.2 4.956 0.09912
Solution:
• Equation for total number of moles in vapour phase are given by:
……. (1)
• Consider the table shown below:
Component Zi Pvi ki ki-1 (ki-1)^2 Zi*(ki-1) Zi*(ki-1)^2
C3 0.2 190 3.8 2.8 7.84 0.56 1.568
i-C4 0.1 72.2 1.444 0.444 0.197136 0.0444 0.019714
n-C4 0.1 51.6 1.032 0.032 0.001024 0.0032 0.000102
i-C5 0.2 20.44 0.4088 -0.5912 0.349517 -0.11824 0.069903
n-C5 0.2 15.57 0.3114 -0.6886 0.47417 -0.13772 0.094834
C6 0.2 4.956 0.09912 -0.90088 0.811585 -0.18018 0.162317
• The polynomial obtained by substituting the values from above table in equation 1
is:
0.56 0.0444 0.0032 0.11824 0.13772 0.18018
+ + − − − =0
2.8nv + 1 0.444nv + 1 0.032nv + 1 −0.5912nv + 1 −0.6886nv + 1 −0.90088nv + 1
……. (2)
• The simplified form of the above polynomial is:
f(nv) = (−0.01458)nv 5 − (0.3944)nv 4 + (0.47298)nv 3 + (1.32231)nv 2 − (1.727)nv + 0.1715 = 0
…….. (3)
• Differentiating above equation and getting value of f’(nv),
f′(nv) = (−0.0729)nv 4 − (1.57764)nv 3 + (1.41894)nv 2 + (2.64462)nv − 1.727
……. (4)
• To calculate the approximate value of nv, using Newton-Raphson Method:
Iteration nv f(nv) f'(nv)
1 0 0.1715000 -1.7270000
2 0.0993052 0.0134647 -1.4519371
3 0.1085787 0.0001241 -1.4251543
4 0.1086658 0.0000000 -1.4249021
5 0.1086658 0.0000000 -1.4249021
6 0.1086658 0.0000000 -1.4249021
• As we can see the values of iteration no. 4,5 and 6 are repeating, the approximate
value of ‘nv’ is 0.1086.
• Hence, the total number of moles in vapour phase is:
nv ≈ 0.10866
……. (5)
• The total number of moles in liquid phase are:
nL = 1 ─ nv ……. (6)
• Thus, for the value of nv = 0.10866,
nL = 0.89134
……. (7)
• Using values of ‘nv’and ‘nL’ , calculating the value of ‘Xi’ and ‘Yi’ by using eqn
𝑍𝑖 ……. (8)
Xi =
[nL + (nv ∗ Ki]
Yi = Xi ∗ Ki ……. (9)
Where, Xi = Mole fraction of component ‘i’ in liquid phase
Yi = Mole fraction of component ‘i’ in gas phase
• Hence, the values of Xi and Yi are:
nv 0.10866
nL 0.89134
Component xi yi
