One-Way Slab (Flexure)

This document discusses the design of one-way reinforced concrete slabs. It defines one-way slabs as slabs supported on two opposite sides, with bending occurring in one direction. The steps provided to design one-way slabs include: 1) computing the factored moment, Mu, 2) determining the amount of flexural reinforcement ρ to resist Mu, and 3) checking that ρ falls between the minimum and maximum reinforcement ratios. The document also notes that one-way slabs require temperature and shrinkage reinforcement perpendicular to the flexural reinforcement. Two example problems are then given to demonstrate the one-way slab design process.

ONE-WAY SLABS

(FLEXURE)
Reinforced Concrete Design

3/3/2019 JOHN CEEDEE M. ALVAREZ, RCE, RMP 1

• Reinforced concrete slabs are large flat plates that are supported
at its side by reinforced concrete beams, walls, columns, steel
beams, or by the ground. If a slab is supported on two opposite
sides only, they are referred to a one-way slabs since the
bending occurs in one direction only. If the slab is supported on
all four sides, it is called two-way slab since the bending occurs in
both direction.

SHRINKAGE AND TEMPERATURE
REINFORCEMENT, 𝜌𝑇 (Sec 407.13)
• Requires that one way slabs, where flexural reinforcement extends in one
direction only, should be reinforced for shrinkage and temperature stresses
perpendicular to flexural reinforcements. According to section 407.13.2.1, the area
of shrinkage reinforcement shall provide at least the following ratios of gross
concrete area bh, (where h is the slab thickness) but not less than 0.0014

• 1.Design a one way-slab having a simple span of 3.1m. The slab
is to carry a uniform live load of 7650 Pa. assume fc=27.6 MPa
and fy= 276 MPa for maon and temp bars. Use unit weight of
concrete as 23.54 kN/m^3

• 2.A one-way slab is to carry a service liveload of 4100 Pa. The
interior slab is supported by columns and has a length of 4m
with both ends continuous. Assume f’c= 20.7 MPa and fy 415
MPa for mainvars and fy 275 MPa for temp. bars. Unit weight of
concrete is 24 kN/m^3
